Win98SE does not shut dowm

This is a different problem than the previous thread on shutting down windows so I hope a new thread is in order here.

The Problem:
When I shut down windows everything starts shutting down til I get to the Windows splash screen that says "Windows is shutting down" at the bottom of the screen. Then the shut down problem stops and never resumes shutting down. This use to work fine on my machine till I reinstalled Win98SE on my computer yesterday. Now it will not shutdown. Any ideas?

Did you do a clean install or did you install SE over the prior installed Windows?

It was done over the existing OS.

Best practice is always to do a clean install, otherwise wrong drivers load and things don't work either immediately or in a few days.
We have at least 4 posts for the way things go wrong in the last 10 days on these forums. Save any personal data for reload later, make a boot disk, and format it/zero fill it depending on the issue you are having.

There's a good troubleshooter here at aumha (http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm). There's a patch for 98SE there, but what has worked fine for me so far is to download the hard drive thing from the Update page. I can't remember what it is called, but in the description it talks about introducing a 2 second delay in Shutdown, giving the hard drive time to completely close things before the faster chips shut the hard drive down. I could "see" a definite difference in Shutdown, and so far, have had no problems in almost a year.

I think that one is for large HDDs to allow cache to finish before shutdown?

You have two choices:

1) Wipe your hard drive and start again with a fresh OS install. Remember to backup your data first.
