View Full Version : Frustrating PC problem

Ok so the other day my second PC refused to boot up. Just nothing at all from turning power on.

So I removed everything from the machine and put the essentials back in one by one. It started up fine until I connected the hard disk, then same error as before, totally dead. Obviously no OS would load without the HDD connected but I got all the BIOS screens and it POSTed fine, just got the Insert System Disk prompt.

So with everything back in the machine except the HDD it worked, soon as the HDD plugged in nothing. I assumed it was the HDD and bought a new one, only to find out that I get the exact same problem with this new HDD.

I am loathed to go replacing more components, I am edging towards thinking it's the motherboard, but not convinced because it only happens with a HDD installed in the machine.

Anyone experienced this before or have any advice?

Did you replace the Data Cable when you installed the New HDD ?
Is your HDD controller onboard or an add-in card ?
Is your Power supply putting out the required Amp’s for the system?

Thanks for the quick response.

Trying to get hold of a new cable now to test that.
It's an onboard controller.
The PSU worked fine on that machine with the old HDD for 2 years or so, last PSU that died on me in a different machine it just stopped working altogether, can they just stop outputting enough amps instead of failing completely?

A PSU can die Slowly or just go DOA all at once

While your at it.
try using another Power connector on the HDD
Leaving the current one unused

Got a new PSU all working fine now, I guess a new 30gb HDD was probably due for that old machine anyway! Thanks for the help.

Nathanr:

Did you have to replace the HD as well as the PSU? Just wondering.

Yes but not tried to check the old HDD yet, the PC is a bit hogged as everyone was missing their surfing fix!

It is very unlikely to be the motherboard when it works fine without the hard drive....
