Ok like a week ago, i had win2k on my system and disabled some of the services that it runs, Then i downloaded disc keeper, which is 200 to 300 times faster than the windows defragger. SO after disabling services and then defragging,(which it got to 50% and i just stop it), I restarted to see every thing was ok, and blam, it was in shambles, error after error. But i got to windows, tried to back things up programs would not open, things could not drag.So to the point what happen

A.Stoping defragger in middle of process B.Cutting services off C.Virus(had virus protection on so couldnt be that, but you never know, update too) D.A&B

Reformatting, had to partition whole drive, could nt partition just half of drive.(wouldnot work)

This is my point of view only. I have found that windows does not like things moved by anyone but windows. I have tried third party utilities and have had nothing but problems, so now I just let windows do its thing. I use Nortons but not all utilities in Nortons. Do not know anything about disc keeper. My 2000 defrags before 2000 boots up and nothing else is running. My defrag will not work with virus protection on. If that bad format and do clean install and let windows do its thing. Wonder if I defrag me if it would make me a pro one day, Thanks Andy and my 2000 is more picky than my 98se

About the same time I was defragging...about 5% to start with...I steppeda away from the machine for a couple of minutes and my two year old shut off the defrag...99% fragmented when I restarted the defrag....so I'd say stopping is the most likely cause, especially if it was in the middle of moving around a critical system file...
