In W98, there is a command you can run that lists everything that runs on startup. I think it was winsystem. It has a tab labled startup and you can uncheck what ever you don't want.

Using XP, is there any way to get a list of everything that runs on startup and uncheck unneeded programs? I am trying to eliminate the modem on hold application.

Try typing 'msconfig' in the run box.

I would download AIDA32 here (http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32). This is a great tool which will tell you more about your system than you could ever dream of.
