Hi everyone!

I had been having trouble with windows installer running when I started up my computer. I tried to go into safe mode to see what program may be trying to access it.

I got as far as MSconfig, startup selection, I clicked normal start, then ok.
And I chickened out and decided to try to find another way to make windows installer stop. But what I can figure out is if I'm still in Safe Mode or not and how do I get out of it. I have new problems, but I'm hoping that that is because I am in safe mode?

Thanks,
Calli

Iam using Windows XP.

To get out of safe mode you just have to reboot. It will automatically go to normal mode.

Thank you pave_spectre for the quick reply.
I am out of Safe mode because I have restarted my computer. But that means I have two new problems. I am not sure if I should start a new topic or not , so I will continue here.

I found the software that was causing windows installer to run. It was my HP Photos to the web(which is part of my printer software) it added a new folder to the desktop. When I try to delete it it gets stuck. So then I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del and the task window went nuts. Multiplying and fanning out like a deck of cards???

The second problem is that I now get a pop up window whenever my screen saver comes on or my computer goes into sleep mode.
It says Unlock Computer. The computer is in use and has been locked. It gives user name owner and a place to enter a password. I am the only user and I have not activated this or put in a password. lol The only way I can get rid of it is to shut off the computer(by holding in the power button)

Sorry there's so much here, would really appreciate help for anyone able to.

Thanks,
Calli

Right-click on your desktop and choose properties. Go to the Screen Saver tab. Is the "On resume, password protect" box checked? If so, uncheck it. If not, let us know that and stand by for further help.

Thank you Pentachris. It was checked, I've unchecked it.(need the embarassed Smilie) Don't know how I did that. I will stand by!

No need to stand by now - that should solve your problem! Feel free to hang out, though. Share your favorite jokes (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24980), or maybe tell us what you think about the RIAA lawsuits against file sharers (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26482).

Enjoy your stay! :)

Edit: Oops. I completely missed the rest of your problem. Maybe try going back in to safe mode and removing the offending software from the "Add or Remove Programs" applet in the Control Panel.

You didn't mention what flavor of Windows you were running (98, ME, 2000, XP). That may help us.

Thanks again, I realized what you meant, about standing, by after I posted that response.

I thought I would come back this morning and give a little more info on my remaining problem.

I have Windows XP.

I ask this question on two other forums. The first time I believe they were telling me how to delete windows installer. But I need it to install software, don't I? The second time they gave me instructions to go in and troubleshoot. But their explaination didn't seem to pertain to my problem.(not that I am ungrateful for their help) And that was the first time I'd attempted to go into safe mode.

The program HP photos to the web is not in the add and remove programs. I have not gone in and looked in safe mode to see if it's there(I'm not sure hoew to do that). I am hoping that someone here can confirm that I need to go in to safe mode or not. This software seems to be there(the folder on the desktop), but then it is not in the add remove programs. I think that if I remove it, it may solve my problem. Also is there a way to go in and specifically remove that item without going through the list and removing and adding programs until I find that one? And if I need to go into safe mode to do it, is there anyway to provide the instructions to do it?

Thanks,
Calli
