so last nite im sittin on my laptop, desktop is ont he desk behind it
well i look back and i alwasy run my screensaver on blank, well when i flip back over to the desktop pc the screen stays blank? move the mouse again nope still nothing and even though the pc has been idle for over 45 minutes my CPu temps are @ 99.4F degrees, normally when its on idle it sits around 79F degrees............ what give did my system lock up? the only thing ive added to it is a 120mm fan for the fron of the case it is linked to the HD, could this bee yanking all the power to the fan? the fan is temp controlled so maybe when that screen saver comes on and it gets the idle temps low myabe it drops the power to the fan which could also drop the power to the HD? leaving to little power for the thing to get out of the screensaver? what gives, any tips?

also SIsoft told me i need to register or buffer a large module of memory i have, how do i do that?

also sisoft told me my DSL PCI latency is to high and i shoudl lower it...how do you go about doing that?

You can safely ignore that. Registered/buffered memory is usually used in servers to ensure data integrity.

I experience similar problems as follows:

1. Screensaver is on; I move the mouse and nothing happens; I press "CTRL" and monitor light goes green, display returns, and the PC responds.

2. PC is on "Standby"; I move the mouse and get no response; I press "CTR+Alt+Del" and hear a "whoosh" [this is the sound I have allocated to the "Close Program" event in my "Sound Scheme"] indicating that a program has closed. The monitor light goes green, display returns, and PC responds. Sometimes I need to press "CTR+Alt+Del" twice to get a response. Sometimes it doesn't work and I'm forced to press & release the "Reset" button.

My guess, in my case, is that a program is not responding, so when I move the mouse the program cannot bring the PC back to life.

I'd like to understand what is happening in the background unseen.

Allocating simple sounds to the "Open Program" & "Close Program" events helps a little. At least I can tell when programs are opening and closing even though there are no visual signs.

OS = Win98.

Something that has almost always been true and probably will be for a long time to come.....

Don't do both a screensaver and power managemnt.

If you want to run a screen saver, turn off power management.....don't let the machine go into standby. Letting both happen can result in exactly what Sylvander descirbes...lockups.

I used to have:

Screen Saver = None
Wait = 8 minutes
Turn off Monitor = 10 minutes
Turn off Hard Disks = 12 minutes
System Standby = 15 minutes

I now have:

Screen saver = None
Wait = 60 minutes
Turn off Monitor = 1 hr
Turn off Hard Disks = 1 hr
System Standby = 1 hr

I now put it into standby manually.

What are the best settings?

yes its been happening when the screen saver comes on, but i got home last nite and decided to crack the case open and unplug the new 120mm fan i just put in the day before, and left it running all nite and got up this morning and evrything was fine.... i think it was taking power away from the HD????

delslo.....that sounds like your power supply is not powerful enough on the 12v leg to handle it.

Syl......the best in my opinion is to go into standby manually all the time......setting all the options to never. But having them on a longer scehdule seems to work better than a shorter one....I think it is because it may take more than 10-15 minutes to finish clearing all the caches when a machine goes idle.
