I have a win 2000 Computer which I had not had online since the numerous worms hit the internet. My son, without asking, went on-line. The next day I tried to load Norton AntiVirus, it would not completely load. Now the computer shows no programs in the control panel in add/remove programs, it will not let me do a search, it will not let me move files in explore. I get no error messages. Norton AntiVirus tells me a version is already running when I try to install it. I went to the Norton site and followed their site advice to delete the norton files, was not successful. any advice.

Put the Win2k install CD in the drive and as the installation progreses it will ask if yoy want to install or repair. Let it repiar the installation.

You could go to mjc's security thread (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15179) and run one or more of the online virus scans. Then it would be a good idea to download, update and run Spybot and/or AdAware.... If you still see any evidence of problems, it would be a good idea to run HijackThis and post a log.

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as C:\Documents or one you create like C:\HJT. Close all browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log. When the log window appears, Right click to copy it, open your browser and come here to post the log. Do not make any changes until it is checked since most items are either benign or essential to the computer.

Best guess is that you have been infected with Blaster or Nachi exploits or some other menace that screws with your antivirus software.

Agreed - Do an on-line scan or else download something like FProt that you can run from (write-protected) floppies after they have been created on another pc. Also make sure you download and install the two critical patches for 823980 (MS03-026) and the 815021 (MS03-007) (http://pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24204). If your pc is networked - disconnect it from the network while you do the above.

When you are all cleaned up install the SP and download all the latest critical updates. Then repair your installation if necessary.

Personally I would uninstall Norton and get AVG or Avast in its place - but that's just a personal preference.
