Intermitant bootup problem

My friend has a year old compaq desktop. Lately, when he power's it up, it will occassionaly display this message: "operating system not found on any device". Sometimes it will go days without this problem occuring but it has alway come back. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be the culprit or what steps to take to figure it out?
