I have an old 486 with two hard drives and a cd-rom connected to sound card. Have had to reinstall win98 but will not recognize cdrom. How can I get system to recognize sound card or cd-rom so I can proceed with install???
If you don’t have win98 installed yet.
You will need to install the old DOS drivers for the sound card and cd
Assuming it is a sound blaster card with ide cd support
You may also find you need to install the Intel Plug and play manager that was included with these later cards..

Hello Gareth...welcome to the PC Forum!
Did not understand your post...You HAVE (past tense) reinstalled Win98, or you HAVE TO (but cannot due to no CD-ROM support)?
There are a couple of options to access the CD-ROM...
If you are currently able to boot up into Win98 I would suggest getting into SAFE MODE (Press Ctrl or F8 during boot up, which ever works for your computer). Go to MY COMPUTER, right click and slide down to PROPERTIES, left click and go into DEVICE MANAGER. Click the (+) sign next to CD-ROM and highlight any you find there and click REMOVE. Reboot and let Windows find and reinstall the drivers. There's a chance you might have "ghost drivers" confusing Windows.
Do you have a Start Up Disk?
Would you post back and let us know if this helps one way or the other?

Sorry for the confusion, No I am unable to reinstall win98. I do not have any dos drivers, just the win 98 cd and a 98 start-up disk. I do have a copy of dos 6.22 at my disposal. Would the sound card and cd drivers be on this? In the mean time I did try and disconnect D: drive and slave the cd-rom off of it with no success
The cd-rom / sound card combo may be one of the proprietary units.
That would explain why it won’t work as the save drive on the ide controller.
You will need to find the old cd-rom / sound card drivers from the manufacturer web site.
They are not included in dos 6.22.
You may however find that you will have to install dos 6.22 onto the hard drive to get everything to work.
As I recall the programs that were originally included with the SB / cd combo used 5 floppies
( Sound, CD and Plug and Pray drivers) So it will be a large download.
Another option that may work far easier for you is to pull the cd-rom drive from the system you are using to post and install that as slave in the old system,
Pulling the cd, sound combo to avoid conflicts.
Then use your boot floppy and install from there.
After you get it installed remove the swap cd and reinstall the sound card and cd-rom combo

Not really sure but here is progress so far.Dos is operating, Sound card says "CT 2230 SB16" Was able to download a dos driver for this, will now recognize sound card but not attached cd-rom. Cd-rom model is "cr-562-b" I located a driver for this but did not yet proceed with install(out of frustration I might add) but I do believe it was a Panasonic. Any help is much appreciated

Ah yep it is !! 99% sure
Do load the drivers it should then work !!(attached on soundcard interface) it should then work like any other standard CD-ROM
there is one other thing . at the base of the sound card ( nearest the external speaker plugs there should be a "bunch" of "Jumpers" some of these directly affect things like the CD-Rom interface port eg On/Off ect
if after you install the drivers and still have no joy with the cd rom get back to us and i will try !! to find my documentation for the card( in a box somewhere ) Good Luck !!

Dudes
I am 100% certain that the CR-562-b is not an IDE CD-ROM it is a Panasonic IDE type (not compatible) i also know of two (there will be more know doubt) controler cards that they were run... they were the CT-1830 type ( ?? is this the forte type ?? ) and im 99% that my testbench has the CT-2230 type controller but its at work and im here !! Doh
i'll get back to you on this tommorro ... (Er later today ! Doh)

Yep everything is just fine, put the cover back on, reboot, controller is gone for hard drives and floppy. If it wasn't for bad luck...
Why does that always happen..
Just can’t win.
I hope you were able to find and solve that little quirk after putting the case cover back on.
( Cables Came Loose) ?
Now where is that 8 year old who advertises being able to set the clock on the VCR? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I found the problem and got it working again but I'm not sure how this affected things. I had inadvertantly switched the power supply cables from cd-rom and Primary hdd. The plugs are identical (rbbg)except for the fact that the plug for the cd-rom had two sets of wire in each prong (2red, 2black...)When switched, I lost floppy controller, hard drive controller, mouse. Switch the two power supplies and everything is fine. Any one no the reason behind this?
