I was installing Win95 OS on a home-made computer(previously Win98).
Used fdisk.exe to partion the HD.
Then used the Win95 Boot Disk to install the OS from the CD.
Prompted me to format.
No problem.

Win95 Installer starts, chose all the typical options.
(I did all these before)
Then selected 'FINISH', system reboots.

After the flashing "Getting ready to run Winows 95 for the firsty time"
for a while, the following error appears.

"While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer"

Restarted, then the Windows95 Setup prompt appears:
1)Normal Mode
2)log.txt
3)Safe
4)Command Mode
..

Whatever i choose the error would still appear.

Please help, I tried to reinstall the OS a couple of times but to no avail.

QUESTION:
1)What is 'device IOS'?
2)Protection Error??
My Win95 CD is an original.
I did this process before on other com. without any prob.
3) Could the HD be faulty?
(Was loaded with Win98 for the past 2 years before i formatted it)
4)Could it be a conflict with the motherboard
(I know nuts about motherboards, and setting up hardware for installation)

SPECS:
AMD K-6 4550MHz
256Mb RAM
GA-5AX ALi Aladdin V AGPset, GIGABYTE Motherboard
Creative Graphics Blaster TNT 16Mb

NOTE:
No prior experience in building a com.
Some experience in installing OS.
Only able to install and solve simple hardware problems.

Was this Win95A or B? The original iteration of 95 only supported a FAT16 file system, not the FAT32 that came with later versions.

If you're using a W98se disk to partition/format the drive you're using a possible incompatible version of the FAT system to install the older version of W95.

One option ( one that i use ) is to go to your Harddrive manufacturers site and download their disk utilities and look for a utility called " zero fill ", this will completely write over your drive with 1's and 0's-very similar to the way you used to have to low level format drives.

Then use a W95 boot disk; or make sure to select " no " if you use the W98 disk when it asks you about the " large disk support " question. ( so you don't use FAT32 again by mistake. )
