I used to have Netscape Navigator installed, as it came bundled with my Corel WordPerfet Suite 8 installation. As I never use the program, I deleted it and removed all named references to it in the Registry.
But its icons still appear in various folders, among them being the Temporary Internet files, and certain Program files. They are described as 'JavaScript File'. I have tried the 'Repair Icons' in 'TweakUI without any result. In Folder Options/File Types the icon is listed as:
Extension: JS
Content Type (MIME): application/x-javascript
Opens With CSCAPE
Is it possible to allocate these with the correct icon - but which one?

In WinXP the default program for opening .js files is the WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe app (MS Windows Based Script Host) and its icon is the one generally displayed as a yellow scroll.
They will be found most typically in the TIF (Temporary Internet Files) folder, in "Webs" and in the file folders downloaded along with web-pages that are saved to disk. They are typically required by those html pages which call them - assuming Javacript is enabled in your browser.
The TIF folder can be emptied of all but cookies from the General Tab of IE's Tools' options. Deleting such files elsewhere will only prevent the full function of those web-pages that reference them - and do no other harm.
Other programs may well open or edit these scripts. I don't know cscape (http://www.cscape.com/cscape/default) but it looks "kosher".

Hi Paul: Forgot to add that I'm running 98SE. Yes I do have Javascript enabled. In Folder Options/Files Types, there is an additional entry (which has the scroll icon) as follows:
Extension: JSE
Content Type (MIME):
Opens with: WSCRIPT
Contrary to what I stated earlier, there are still two remaining references to Netscape in the Registry, under 'Corel, Netscape'. When I deleted these, I found that some weblink URLs wouldn't open.
For example, links in an email refused to open, but the same URL worked when I Cut & Pasted it into I.E.6. However, links on the PC Guide all worked OK. But, just to be on the safe side, I reinstated these Netscape Registry items afterwards.
As you said, they're doing no harm. It's possible that something was calling for a link that was no longer associated with it.
Internet Explorer (and Windows Explorer) are still 'hanging' quite frequently, and Web links sometimes freeze when clicked on.
