Strange problem:
Running WinXP pro.
I ran the system file checker utility "sfc \scannow". It prompted me for my WinXP CD, saying that "the files needed for Windows to run properly must be copied to the dllcache folder". It required me to click the "retry" button each time it needed to access the CD (sort of strange if ya ask me).
Now here's the problem:
After sfc finishes, I reboot the system. On startup, I get a STOP error message. I try to boot in safe mode and it seems clear that the error is occuring while loading "mup.sys". Cannot get my system to boot at all.
So I do a clean install of WinXP. Just for giggles, I try running sfc again. SAME ERROR! even on a clean install of XP. tried this a few more times, with the same results.
Can this be anything BUT a bug in the operation of sfc or the file protection system?
Anyone else had problems with sfc or windows file protection?
I thought that microsoft claimed to have fixed it by this version of windows?!
