I recently built a system for the first time. THe computer boots okay, but as soon as I try to go on the Internet or open more than one window at once, the system hangs. Or, I get a fatal exception error in the first few minutes informing me of an illegal operation. There is no software loaded on this system other than Windows 98.

Seems like you did something wrong with the installation

Where else would you rather be than right here right now
Post the exact error messages.....

Yes, but what? This was purchased as a barebones system already set up. I don't think there are many errors I could have made.

Try to re installed your OS chances are some missing file during last installation. It happened to me before. But keep in mind that sometimes while re installing it may fail again. if that is the case upgrade your OS to a latest version. Or re format the HD and go ahead with fresh installation

Thanks for the suggestion. I've already reformatted and reinstalled Windows 98 a number of times. No luck!

You can try here (http://www.techadvice.com/w98/err_with/vwin32_err.asp) for the last one...but I think that if they are all different you could have a corrupt install. Or a memory problem...check with where you bought it from, tell them you suspect you have a memory problem and see if you can get a new stick of RAM to try.
