Problem:
Computer hangs after some time whenever it is connected to the Internet and IE 5.0 is running (No error msg or BSOD; completely no response from keyboard, mouse, etc. Just the reset button works). Had been working fine (as fine as Win98 SE can be with its various crashes). According to user, no hardware changes made; various software put on and off in form of games.
Connection is via an internal modem (Motorola SM56--a discontinued model) using PPP and TCP/IP. RnaApp, the default dialer, is used.

Have tried:
1. Double-checking modem properties/network(TCP/IP) settings--OK
2. Installing latest updates to various peripherals and OS (except modem--reinstalled driver)
3. Scanning for viruses both in Win98 and from DOS via boot disk--negative.
4. Using Norton WinDoctor to repair various problems--shortcuts, invalid registry entries, etc.
5. Used SFC to verify file versions and checksums--replaced existing files with latest versions.
6. Double-checked system startup options in registry, win.ini, system.ini, config.sys, autoexec.bat and tried various clean boot options to no avail.
7. Reinstalled Win98 SE (i.e. no formatting). This temporarily solved the problem. But after 2-3 days, it started again.

I'm a little out of ideas now... I can think of 3 more options:
1. Find the latest modem drivers and install them.
2. If that fails, switch modems and test system stability. If stable, I suppose the internal modem is busted?)
3. Format hard disk and perform a clean install of the OS.

Comments and suggestions are most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Oh, also tried:
1. Double-checking BIOS settings and using the safest options--made no difference.
2. Used Device Manager to look for resource conflicts--none found.

Hi gctk, you mentioned re-installing modem driver. Did you remove the modem from Device Manager in safe mode. If not give it a try and see if there are any ghost drivers in there. If there are remove them all and re-boot.
