hey guys.. i nowdays i feel i like overclocking my PC. i have an Ahlon XP 1600+.. 512mb PC2700 ram.. Soltek SL75DRVR-E mobo.. MSI G4 Ti4200 64mb 8x. so tell me how much can i overclock my CPU and VGA..... WITHOUT ANY SPECIAL COOLING..i have a stock fan and heatsink.. i dont put on the case cover.

and another thing tell how should i overclock my CPU.. increase the bus cause i think my procesor has a mulitiplier lock ... and tell me the speeds in which my Ti 4200 will run fine with visible performance difference..

i'll tell you what are the temps without overclocking...
CPU= 40 degrees
VGA= 35 degrees.. and the red line is at 58 degrees

one last thing.. i have a problem with my powersupply.. the hardware monitor show.. 2.8v in the 3.3v.

PLZ.. advice me!

First thing, THERE'S NO GUARANTEE IN OVERCLOCKING!!! and if you do decide to OC and you burn/destroy your cpu, it'll be your fault entirely don't blame anyone else.

Ok, now that we have an understanding:D let's get it on. With just stock cooling and since that 1600+ is a Palomino, you won't get very far. As for the ti4200, since it's a 64mb the ram is of better quality then the 128mb version. That's all I can say lol.

in know there is know garantee in overclocking.. but plz tell me which speeds can i achive with overclocking without burning the stuff.. both VGA and CPU

Dude, if you know there's no guarantee, then don't ask for how far you can OC. Every chip is different, the factors(ram/mobo/HS/F) involve are different. OCing is more of trial and error rather than set it and forget it.

Look for some overclocking sites and they might have some good info. We don't recommend or support overclocking here because it is not a project to undertake if you are not very familiar with computers and willing to accept the risks involved. You can easily fry more than just a CPU.

1600+ = 1400 MHz = 133 MHz X 10.5.

Since you can't change the multiplier easily, you can only OC by increasing the FSB. I agree with others here that the Palamino doesn't OC very well. 150-155 is probably all you can get with air cooling. This modest increase in speed will be barely noticeable and probably not worth the risk to other components.

You could get an XP 1700+ (133 X 11= 1467 MHz) Thoroughbred B for about $50. This could be clocked at 166 X 11 = 1833 or possibly higher (XP 2200+) on air cooling providing your MB has some way to set the FSB:AGP:PCI ratios to 166:66:33 = 5:2:1 or some other way to control the AGP and PCI speeds. Read your MB manual carefully.

The following site has lots of info on OCing that might be useful:

http://www.overclockers.com/

Also there is a simple (5 sec) MB mod that will allow you to change multipliers on XP CPU's that are locked:

http://www.lostcircuits.com/cpu/amd_unlock/1a.shtml

Unfortunately the trick doesn't work on Palominos.

I think you are missing a couple of important points:

This is not an overclocker's forum.... If you want to learn how to overclock and discuss the intricacies of how to burn, oops, I mean avoid burning up your components, your best bet is to go to an overclocker's forum where they will enthusiastically give you ideas about overclocking anything that has a processor in it somewhere....

And, no one knows.... As was said, OCing is an art (for people who can afford to replace burned out components), not really as science. You experiment to find out what the overclocking tolerance of the component is. OCers can tell you how much they did with the same component, but that doesn't mean you can do the same....

Without any modifications, the standard CPU OC is 5-10%. Palomino core AthlonXP's are more like 4-8%. The standard GPU OC is 2-5%. The GF4 Ti 4200 should be within this range.

As with all OC'ing, there are no guarantees (blah blah blah) but I do recommend that you replace your power supply. Voltages should be no more than 15% variant (you're currently hugging the line). 5% for OC'ing.
