When booting PC I get an error and the machine never comes up. The message it get is:
While Initializing device VKD:
Windows Protection error. Y
The machine gets as far as the Windows 98 screen and then dies. It does it both in safe and normal modes.
I know VKD is video keyboard device and have switched out the keyboard with the same results.
Any help would be appreciated....tried to reload Win98 without reformating... thanks
I think you are mixing up two different items.
KVM is key board video monitor
VKD is listed on my system as Hidvkd.sys a system driver
it is in windows/ system 32 folder
It is One of the files that a Trojan will delete to disable your system.

I hope you have a virus program restore disk

Here's is another way that might fix the problem. Reboot the machine and select the option to come up at the command prompt. Next do a scandisk using the surface check option. If there are any problems let scandisk fix them and continue on. After scandisk is finished, reboot. If everything is fixed, the system should come up normally. It might indicated that your hard drive is going south on you. If you have any software to check the drive, run it and if the drive is still under warranty get it replaced. Do this before the drive goes south so you can copy your data over to the new drive (Western Digital will send a new drive and you return the bad one in the box the new came in).
c:>scandisk /surface
