View Full Version : Unread Mail on Welcome Screen
The unread mail notification doesn't show up on my Welcome Screen (nor does X programs running). I want this to show up though. I've tried the registry tweak offfered by MS, tried TweakUI, and some other things, but nothing works. Hope I can get some help with this.

You have two other topics posted, one of them being a problem concerning lock ups. Let's get that figurerd out and solved, before trying to make any changes or adding software that could easily confuse the issue surrounding the initial problem.
That's always a rule when dealing with computer problems, make NO software changes at all until you resolve the problem, each change adds undesirable variables to consider while troubleshooting. Leave it alone until the lock ups are figured out...one thing at a time...
Same for the registry cleaner, leave it alone until we figure out what the deal is with the lockups. Tinkering with the registry can make it worse in a hurry...although a registry cleaner shouldn't actually cause problems, you always face the possibility it might not work correctly...

I didn't see this thread when I posted a reply in your "Registry Cleaner" thread.
Pete brings up a good point....Best to get your Lock-up problem (and any other problems)figured out before possibly creating even more nightmares messing around with the Registry.
The lockups on one computer, the registry cleaner and the unread mail is on another.
Both running XP, sorry for the confusion though

Regarding X program running not showing on the welcome screen, the "Program Running" value is arrived from this registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SessionInformation\ProgramCount
Check to see whether the value is set to other than zero. Also check the permissions by right clicking on 'SessionInformation'.
As you have already tried the TweakUI for Unread Mail Notification, I would suggest that you try this fix, Enable/Disable Unread Mail Notification in Windows® XP and/or Fix Windows® XP Logon/Restore Welcome Screen from http://www.dougknox.com/ , you will find them in Winxp fixes page.
BTW the Unread Mail Notification is supported only by outlook express and MS windows Messenger only, If you are using any other mail client, you won't receive the notification, whatever fix you apply.

Sorry I took so long to reply. Got a lot of things going on. Anyway, the program count is working normal. I've tried that script, from Doug Knox. The permissions were fine as well. I use both Outlook Express and Windows (not MSN) Messenger. I don't know why it wouldn't work.
