I have been experiancing low system resources,[start>programs>start-up]shows only my anti-virus/firewall.msconfig lists sevearl more programs, some are listed as 'per user run' some 'machine run' what is the differance? These do not however show up in my syart up folder. After sitting idle about an hour S/R were at 74% logged on to internet dropped to 68% checked outlook express went to 54% which is where they currently read. They also drop while just in windows(not logged on net) running games.

Hi ..
there are usually lots of programs that start with windows that you will not be shown
boot windows and tap CTRL-ALT-DEL this should show you most of the currently running programs....
Some are needed (Windows Programs)and some are not(User Programs)
other than the Program/StatUps menu, there are other program load links some of these are located inside the system registry . And i will at this point stress "DO NOT MESS UP THE REGISTRY" cause its bad M'Kay
open RegEdit.Exe and Back it up first (found in the C:\Windows folder..)
Right the main start folders ARE :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
Look here and look for "stuff" that you KNOW you dont need and delete it (or back it up and Delete away... can be Risky)
Be careful and good luck !!
P.S "explorer" , "rnaapp" , "rundll" , "stimon" and "systray" are some that i think should be there always ??

Hey Lucias,
Everything that is turned on uses S/R. This is not directly related to RAM. When you turn programs and other devices off, you free up resources. Windows is known for not releasing all of the resources when you turn something off. A reboot is sometimes needed to free up missing resources.
I don't have an exact definition of 'Per user' and 'Machine run' programs but would assume the logical, 'Per user-you turn it on from a simi-started condition' and 'Machine run- fully on from startup.'
There are many opinions about what needs to be on at startup. The fact of the matter is only Explorer(Windows) needs to be on for your machine to come on. From there other desired features can be decided personaly.
The numbers you posted seem to be well within acceptable levels.
Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

User run...if you had more than one user profile setup on the machine that would only run for one user, for anohter user it would need to be added to that profile. Machine run the program is running for all the users....
If there is only one profile then it doesn't really matter.....
