View Full Version : nerds can't spell??
dweeb-beater

Hey nerd folk, I've been looking through the site and am blown away by the sheer number of supposedly well-educated, big-brained individuals who can't even spell correctly.
Why is this? Is the average geek using too much brain-power sorting his CPU to carry such basic functions as spelling, syntax and grammar at the same time? Like load-shedding?
Or..... is it that the PC world attracts reasonably smart losers who did badly at school due to inherent laziness and who, therefore, naturally drift into a field where they can spend the day seated, exerting themselves no more than popping the occasional pimple?
Serious replies only thanks......

About 1,976 years back a wealthy man invited to dinner, a poor man noted for his wisdom and sagacity.
At the meal the wealthy man noticed that the poor man had not washed his hands before eating and took him to task for this error in good etiquette.
The poor man pointed out that there were more important things in life than such trivial niceties, and he should get things in proportion and deal with the important things first.
Perhaps he had in mind such things as:
How to treat a guest.
To treat others, as you would wish to be treated yourself.
To be kind to ourselves and to others and accept and forgive the imperfections to which all human flesh is heir.
To strive to improve ourselves rather than expending our efforts to belittle others.
For though we speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not loving-kindness we are about as lacking in humanity as a sounding bell or a tinkling cymbal and probably the things we then say would have about as much worth.
It is not the things that go into a person that defile them, but what comes out of them.
Therefore don’t speak thoughtlessly or with unkindness.
Do not use truth as a weapon with which to maim and injure.
Don’t tear down others to make yourself feel bigger,
For if we are lucky and live in a world of justice, our actions will be suitably rewarded.

Note the above Highlight
Most of the "dweebs" around here have a pretty good sense of humor, and don't have much problem with laughing at themselves on occasion. After all, life is too short to take oneself too seriously.
However, you should realize that this is a technical forum. If your only purpose here is to irritate people and elicit responses, then that's what we geeks call "trolling". It gets old very fast.. and then the account(s) of those who do it get locked.
Consider this a word to the wise from the "head dweeb" around these parts.

I thought this was an area for general discussion, not answers to questions. Just adding my two cents worth to a thread that caught my eye. Not my fault Abbadons name kept coming up.
Nasco, we all make mistakes. There was certainly no need to single out Abbadon four times.
I have just reviewed your posting history since you showed up here about two days ago and I am not impressed, to say the least. I would suggest that it is time for you to make a decision: either become a reasonable and productive member of this community, or please leave.
Thank you,
Charles

Easy to pick on a few typos. The internet in general is an English teacher's nightmare, not just on PC forums.
Welcome dweeb-beater. I wonder how long it will be before you become tired of your little game. I must say, you sure have me feeling terribly angry. I'm all riled up. Why, the nerve of you...and all that jazz.

Well to the bored and casual of shallow nature and simple process, it would appear so at first glance. But you can see the minds of some already beginning to grind into motion, exercising those corners not used since the keyboard was first placed before them.
Allow me to elucidate: The patently OBVIOUS mistakes in my "sig" which even Rick noticed are an intentional slur. He just hasn't worked out against whom...
You can already see the nerds sharpening up their skills, proof-reading twice in 'preview' before hitting "submit" in a manner akin to the sucking-in of guts in the pool-side scene of "Caddyshack" (you pimply, teen-age dweeboids wouldn't have heard of it).
Abbagail isn't the only literary-shambles, by a long shot.
I have a mission here and intend to see it through even if my purposes are nopt yet clear to all.

Well, I tried to be reasonable. It's too bad that you didn't spend a bit more time on diplomacy than on literary fastidiousness.

Usually, this type of provocation comes from board intellectual splinter groups with a chip on their shoulder. These sons of beeches were just checking our integrity and soon found out they were the saps as ixl wound up pruning them.
They were barking up the wrong tree (as jabar pointed out) when they came around here and should have just leaved us alone.
They didn't come here to learn. Had they axed us any legitimate PC questions, they would have found us bending over backwards for them.
I think it was Milton Burl who used to say something to effect that, 'You'll find it hard to stump real leaders because their roots go deep!'
That would be us...no shallow veneer their abrasive nature could easily sand through. Solid PC GUIDE folk, not like these ashes who thought they could easily topple us! What block heads! :p
They tried to poke a stick in our eye and had to walk the plank!
I think I'll lumber off and get some coffee now...

English is a second language for many people
besides that
Who really cares if a person can spell realy reely or really
They come here for help and We do the best we can to help them solve computer related problems ( Including how to get their spell checkers working :) ) If that is what they want to do.

It seems to me that you would rather focus on spelling errors than being considerate and put forth an effort to help someone.
Any fool can point out spelling errors but it takes a bigger person to over look them.
You have to realize, which I am sure you don’t, that English is a second language for a lot of people on the Internet.
After reading this thread and your replies to other threads, I have come to the conclusion that you seem to be an angry person that likes to degrade others to make yourself feel important or worthy. You get joy from getting others angry.
I would bet any amount of money that you have done this in the past on other forums.
Maybe one day you will grow up and realize that "Internet spelling" is not that important as long as you can get your point across.
Just to let you know, I am not angry or upset with this post. I have seen your kind before time and time again.
If anything, I feel sorry for you that you need to belittle yourself in this manner.

John0904,
You make some very good points, but I fear the intended recipient has already left the building. If you were intending your comments for the rageful person that began this thread, he/she has been banned from the site and while he/she may be lurking to see if we are still reacting to his/her provocation, it is probably more likely that he/she has found another forum to harass in the present. Also, it appears that you well stated logic would be unlikely to have a positive impact since the person who started the attack really did not seem to be interested in logic.

Budfred,
I read the entire thread and knew that the poster has been banned. But I am guessing that he is banned from posting, but not from reading.
But either way, I wouldn't care if he did replied. I said my peace.
But nevertheless, if he reads what I wrote or not, it may gives others the chance to rethink that spelling is not as crucial as they think it is. ;)
But that does raise my intrest. Can a banned person read posts or are they banned from the site entirely?

Okay the tree stuff was funny. Though a bit scary. :)
Someone who is banned from the site can access the main page and that's it. They cannot read forums.
Getting access to read the site is trivially easy, in a number of different ways. Totally blocking someone who is determined to keep registering and stirring the pot is very difficult, if they know what they are doing.

How is that ?
As far as I know, anyone can click on the link leading to the forums.
Even if you make your server refuse HTTP requests from his IP (or ISP - I believe that is possible, isn't it ?) he can still use another computer.

Using another computer is one of the trivially easy ways referred to in the very next sentence after the ones you quoted.

Well, maybe you can tell me why he shouldn't be able to access the forums then ?
Jeeza, I just meant he can't access it using his banned ID. Yes, he can log out and read that way... blocking read access isn't something I really care about that much, it's just that the banned group is set to not provide any permissions right now.
