I am helping a friend set up wireless network and have came upon a problem.

His dsl modem that he got from his provider is actually a DSL router.

He purchased a wireless router from Gateway.

The DSL router and the Gateway wireless router both have the same
IP address of 198.162.1.1

The guy at the DSL provider said that I need to change to IP address on the wireless router because they can not share IP addresses.

I guess what I am asking is can you have 2 "routers" and how do I go about changing the IP address for the wireless router.

I sorry if this does not make much sense but I am still newbie in the wireless networking stuff.

I would use the DSL router and trade the other router for a Linksys switch, if you need more computers on the network.
The DSL router will usually give you a hardware firewall and at least 4 ports.

Can you add another router? Sure. You may need to use crossover cable to uplink to the second router, then configure the second addresses and set up the security for the wireless.

You access the routers with the ip gateway address on most routers.

Most DSL modems can act as a single port router. In your case you could change the routers IP and make it more of a hub, persay.

If your DSL modem is a single-port router as well as a modem (find out from his provider)

-then-

On the linksys setup page (192.168.1.x) set the CONFIGURATION to DHCP (automatic configuration). Then change the IP ADDRESS to 10.10.10.1 (this WILL change the routers page to 10.10.10.1 instead of 192.168.1.1)

Apply the settings

Start - Run - "command" - type "ipconfig /release" - then type "ipconfig /renew"

Under the status tab do a DHCP release and DCHP renew.
