Thanks for your help. I've suddenly lost sound from my cd rom and dvd players. I have sound from my mp3's on my hard drive, but that is all.
Athlon 1.2, Win 98,
I don't remember setting up seperate audio drivers for these units.

If you are getting other sounds, it is possible that the connection from the CD to your sound card has become loose. There is always a bit of vibration in the case which can cause this. Another possibility is dust accumulation, which can sometimes short out a connection.
Open your case. Check the connection from CD devices to sound card. Next get a vacuum cleaner and try removing dust from inside the case. If your vacuum can blow as well as suction, set it to blow, which will stir the dust up. Then set it to suction. It is obviously not a good idea to touch anything with the vacuum nozzle. Also, use the attachment with the smallest opening to get maximum effect.
If no sounds are working, you have to trouble shoot. Start by removing and reinstalling sound card drivers. Next check that sound card has not vibrated loose. Next borrow sound card from a friend or install your sound card in another system to verify that your sound card is still functional. If all that fails, maybe buy another sound card or ask for more advice from somebody.

Hello Gene,
Your answers are certainly compact! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif However, as Yoda alluded to earlier, a little more information would help us tremendously. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Have any suggestions worked for you? If not, did you do anything like adding software, or perhaps a hardware device recently prior to your sound difficulties?
If you have the speaker icon on your task bar you might try right clicking and open the Volume Controls and see what's been muted.

I would reload my sound drivers [after checking the wiring from CD rom and DVD player to the sound card].......if reloading the sound card drivers didnt do the trick, it would most likely be the sound card has a bad module...cause it would never happen that a cd and a dvd both died regarding sound, at the same time.
