Kernal usage goes to 100% in bootup (during Win 98 loading) and system locks up. Can't even get thru the startup items. Can force drives to MSDOS access mode, or disable secondary IDE controller, and then can at least get the system up (don't have DVD/CD-RW available in this mode). Need help. Have tried full restore and still have same problem. Suggestions?"

I have a Compaq Presario 5868 with Win 98 SE (CD-RW & DVD, v90/DSL modem, no other HW plugged in). Have tried turning off almost all entries in MSCONFIG settings, did a SYSTEM_SAVE restore, Full Restore, virus scan, don't have Media Player 7.0 installed...

Welcome steveme sounds like a mess to me http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
When you went to msconfig did you turn off every thing, some are vital to the computer to run. If your not sure about a program, and what it is dont uncheck it.
Do that and post back and tell us what happen. If that doesnt fix it could be a host of other problems.
