New to these boards so please bear with me.
I have recently upgraded my 6X cd rom to A Delta 50X.
The drive door will open, it will accept cd's but I get the messages like device not ready or please insert Cd. Sometimes it will play Cd's for a while and then lose contact. Usually when this happens I can hear the drive reving up and then faltering over and over again. I have already replaced the power supply. The light indicating Drive is being accessed will go off and on even when there are no CD's installed and when I am not trying to use it.I borrowed an 8X drive from a friend and tried it in my computer with no problems. I exchanged the original drive for another one (same make and model) with the same results.I have read all the posts on this board pertaining to CD drives and it sounds as though this is a common problem but I didn't see any posts indicating that the info helped them. My system is a pentium 120, 48 megs of ram, Win 98SE OS.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Hoop

Make sure the ribbon cable is hook up right, the red stripe indicates pin1 try and switch the cable the other way, also make sure every thing is securely connected and the ribbon cable is going in to the mother board correclty also,

Would suggest that you enter SAFE MODE and check in the DEVICE MANAGER under CD-ROM drives. Highlight any you see there and click REMOVE. Reboot and let Windows find the drive and install the drivers.

It is possible that you might have some "ghost" drivers present that are confusing your system.

Wow, how coincidental that you should have trouble with a Delta 50x CDRom. Just today I finally installed one that I got new on sale for nine bucks about a year ago. Guess what? Yep its faulty. It spins up, but falters, slows, and misreads. I have never had a bad CDRom before, but it looks like I got what I paid for this time. I only hope you got yours on sale too.
