I have moved this in the hope to get more help!
The thing is now I have managed to boot the computer with a CD, bypassing using the floppy drive as it does not work.
We have partitioned the new 40gig drive and formatted it, it is now recognised as drive C:
The problem is now, the computer will hang A LOT!! When we try setup for Windows ME at DOS promt, it will ask to do a system scan, then we press enter and it will either hang on the scan itself or before then. Sometimes we have even had it hanging when asking for directory listings on drives.
We have also tried Windows 98 and it doesnt do anything with that.
The motherboard is a K7S5A, with an Athlon Thunderbird 1.4Ghz chip, 512Mb DDR RAM, Seagate 40gig HDD, Intel i740 AGP graphics atm.
Thanks

I dont' recall your other post; but Yoda is right-if it's been posted and someone has tried to assist you-don't start a new thread, just go back to your original one and repost a problem/solution, we'll get around to it again.
That said; i use the same board-my suggstions to you are; Check to see if your floppy cable is installed correctly, or buy yourself a new floppy drive-for less than $20 it's not a piece of hardware you should do without, Once you have your floppy operational then use the FDISK /MBR switch to clear your master boot record on this drive. or , use the harddrive manufactureres zero fill utility to completely wipe the drive ( kind of like a low level format ), so that it's back in new -blank shape again Then run scandisk from your DOS startup disk with the surface scan enabled to check for bad sectors.
Once you've got it up and installed, then i would suggest you ge the newest BIOS for the board as it fixes some issues with peripheral card recognition.

Uhhhh...the same people who would see one post in one area will see it here, too. More help is not gotten by moving your posts around, it just irritates people!
Plus if you really suspect that there is damage to the CPU please try and resolve that first...no amount of fiddling with settings is going to overcome physical damage to a processor! Also double check to make sure that the BIOS settings are correct for the processor you are using...or if you have the option of jumpers for setting the CPU parameters double check those too.
