View Full Version : Scandisk runs every time I start up.

I apologize in advance for not having more information on the system specs, but here's what's happening. On my father-in-law's Toshiba laptop, running Windows 98, every time he turns it on it runs Scandisk as if he didn't use the windows shutdown function. I tried going into the Close Program box and manually shutting everything down and then shutting down the machine, thinking maybe something was hanging up, made no difference. He says his company's tech support looked at it and did something, he couldn't tell me what, but they told him it was fixed. Problem remained. He's just resigned to running scandisc everytime he starts up, usually just exits from it, but any help would be appreciated.

No worries on a quick answer, it will be this weekend before I can take a look at it again, and he doesn't care anymore. I would just like to be able to help him out.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for all the tips I've picked up lurking around here for the last few months.

every time he turns it on it runs Scandisk as if he didn't use the windows shutdown function.

That is what it is supposed to do. Why does he want to shut it down without using the Windoze Shutdown feature???

Budfred- Unless I'm missing something here, he is shutting it down properly...But it still runs scandisc on the next startup.

"...as if he didn't use the Windows shutdown function". (Not that he actually isn't). ;)

Hopefully, Whyzmans link may offer a solution.

Oops, I didn't see the "as if"... In that case, I would suspect a program that is running and interfering with the shutdown. If that is the case, I don't understand why the techs didn't find it unless they just didn't bother.... Hopefully that MS link will help if that isn't it...

Thanks for the link, I won't be able to take a look at his machine until tomorrow as he's traveling with it, but I appreciate the help.

And unfortunately, I think his tech people didn't want to bother with it. In all fairness to them, though, my father in law isn't the easiest person to deal with sometimes ;) so they may have been less than inclined to help as much as they could have.

Your System May Be Underclocked, I Have Had That Happen To Me With An AMD K6-2 350 Underclocked as a AMD K6 266, Running 98 Second Edition, I Even Applied The Shut Down Patch From Microsoft, But Eventually I Went Into MSCONFIG and Disabled Scandisk @ Startup. I Found Out An Entire Year, (I Wasn't Even Using The Machine That Entire Year) When I Found Out That It Was Underclocked.

There are several reasons why scandisk runs at startup.

First question, does he get the message the message "Windows did not shutdown properly?

If so, follow the suggestion from Whyzman.

If that fails:

Read this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;187607).

I would also download the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic software as failing hard drives an cause scandisk to run.

Please note the date on the last post to this thread prior to thewi2kbug's comment... I think this is either resolved or simply tolerated... :D

It was tolerated for awhile until they issued him a new laptop a couple of months ago. Thanks anyway guys, I appreciate the help.
