View Full Version : AOL 6.0 screwing up settings

Hopefully this will be easy to answer. I have just loaded AOL 6.0 but have IE 6 as my default browser. Before I loaded AOL, when I started IE it came up with the "Connect to" box for my default ISP but since AOL has been loaded it doesn't seem to do this anymore. I am only using AOL in the daytime, and only while I have a 100 hour free trial so after 6.00 PM I want to use my default ISP but due to the problem I have to go into Dial Up Networking and click the ISP icon.

Anyone know how I can get this back? As I have Win ME I did a system restore back to before the AOL install and then it worked OK, but as soon as I wanted to use AOL it made the same changes to the system again. When I have finished with AOL I will definately cancel the subscription so I will restore then, but I don't really want to do this.

That is the way AOL is...it wants to be the default "everything" look through the AOL options/prefrences and see if you can find something like "Check that AOL is the default brower at start up...." or you may just have to love with your manual dial until you decide what you are going to do with the AOL...

Hello Chris and welcome,
Go to Start>settings>control panel>internet options>connections tab.
Select your other ISP connection and hit "Set as Default" button.

Just a question, why would you need to use AOL only in the daytime?

or,

everytime you connect using AOL, just open IE>> click tools>> internet options>> Advanced TAB>> Restore defaults.

This will make IE your default browser durring any windows session.

don't know if this will help....

I have an account in the UK with BT Internet but it only works off peak (6 PM to 8 AM and all weekend). I have been off work recently and wanted to use the net in the daytime, so I thought I'd sign up for AOL and just use the free hours in the daytime until I go back to work.

Thanks for the help, but I have tried doing all your suggestions and it still doesn't work. As mentioned before WIN ME's system restore does the trick, but does anyone know if the System restore feature puts out a log anywhere so I can see what was done in the restore. I am hoping this would show exactly what had changed to stop this working.

Cheers

Not that I know of...it is just that AOL WILL try to take over as the default internet application everytime it is used...if it doesn't have a setting to disable this behavior then it something that is buried deep in the code of one or more of the various parts of AOl, and cannot be disabled without some serious "hacking". Basically the ME restore removes the registry settings that exist now, but did not exist before AOL is run...and they are numerous, so many that it would be difficult to manually remove them and dangerous too (real risk of messing up the registry beyond all repair). Even if you have 1000 free hours I, personally, don't think the chance of messing up an install of Windows is worth the risk of running AOL if it isn't absolutely necessary...just use the disk to scare off birds from your garden...I do, and I think it is a much better use for them than letting them in my computer (oh, if you couldn't tell I don't really like AOL...but enough of that)

I agree with mjc, and I have another suggestion. If you like to shoot at flying targets, take the disk out side, toss it in the air and take some pot-shots at it. That's what I think of SOL. Opps, darn it. I meant to say AOL. Sorry 'bout that.

This might not really meen much but (if you haven't already try this)disable the AOL in your system tray so that it wont auto start when booting up.

What's up with that?

I have sorted this out now. Under Tools, Internet Options, connections I checked the box "Always dial my default connection".

Thanks for all your help, both for the problem and how to best use my AOL CD!
