Hi,
i have just installed a clean version of win2k, and since the first boot it takes about 3 min. to boot, but when finished it runs perfectly. It hangs at about the half of the small blue line on the logo startup, for more than 1 minute, and then continue. I have had win2k in the past on this computer with the same hardware and it doesn't take so long to boot.
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks in advance, this forum is very interesting

Could be that a connection is being sought on a network card that is unused. Windows will spend some time on boot-up trying to establish a connection on any LAN adapter it can find. Do you have any unused LAN adapters? If so, disable them in device manager and you should see a difference in the time it takes to boot.

Thanks,
yes i have an unused network card and i disabled it but it takes the same time, maybe 3 seconds less when the desktop appears with the box "Preparing the network connections"... and that's it

I dont remember it being as bad as with XP but you might want to check what services are running and maybe disable any unneccesary ones.

Right, pave.
You could try here (http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm#Windows_2000_Professional_and_Server) , SkyTrax.

Thanks all,
Sorry my english is not very well, i'm french, But
I just solved the problem!! The only hardware configuration that i have changed (sorry i didn't told you) since the last time i had installed win2k on this computer is that now win2k is on the same hard drive (Maxtor 20gb) but the drive is now on the secondary IDE channel, on D:, i use the C: drive (an old 4gb drive) for win98 and it's needed for boot informations. My last installation, that was also a dual boot configuration (on 2 partitions), used only the Maxtor drive and boot up quickly, and the 4gb drive was used in slave.
So, i have looked in the device manager for some hard drive settings and i have disabled the DMA Mode for the old 4gb HD (that windows has configured automatically) and now it's ok! It boots in 1 min. and not freeze in the middle of the boot process.
Thanks,
Francois
