OS: Windows ME

My compuer has a DVD player which I have never used. I just figured I
could pop the DVD in there and Windows would launch whatever I need to
play it, which it didn't. I tried using Windows Media Player (version 7.01.00.3055) but didn't see anything in there to play a DVD. Tried Help, but no help. Do I need to get some special software to play DVD?

Thanks,
Relztrah

You need a codec. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=272985)

I believe there are some free ones available for downloading.

Unfortunately, the DVD playback capabilities of Windows is hampered by the fact that Microsoft didn't actually want to pay anyone for the privilege of using DVD software, so the software isn't actually implemented.
Your assumption that you need some further software is spot on - WinDVD/PowerDVD or something similar is what's needed. You should check the disks that came with your system - there may be something in there. If not, the relevant software is relatively cheap. Do a search on the forum for DVD software, in order to get an idea of which one is recommended.
