Hi all,

I was hoping to get some help with problems with video memory, I have recently upgraded my PC to an AMD athlon XP 2500, DFI Lanparty motherboard, 764 megs of ram, and a geforece fx 5200. I feel its a pretty decent machine and the motherboard can support up to 8x agp etc. However I have been experiencing problems when running games, I am gettig very strange graphics effects problems, i can only describe it as like polygons overlapping on the screen. Anyhow I have downloaded the latest drivier from nvidia and direct x 9b, but I still get the same problems, it loads up the game and then about 5 minutes into the game the weird effects begin to happen. Anyhow I have ran a freeware benchmark software called 3D Mark 2003 from a company called futureware. The tests fail saying that theres not enough video memory. I am mystified as to what the problem might be, I have checked my BIOS and AGP is enabled, I havent looked to over clock anything, everything has been left at its optimal settings. I am suspecting something is not quite right with the AGP port, originally i thought it was the card ( i did have a geforce mx 420), so i went out and brought this 5200 but it has made no difference. Is there anything i can check to ensure that the sAGP port is working ie something in windows? Thanks for your help.

:D

3DMark '03 requires 128MB of dedicated video RAM. They do make FX 5200's with only 64MB of RAM. Might you have gotten one of those?

If the AGP is set at 8x in BIOS, then see if reducing it to either 4x or 2X helps.

What version of Windows are you running? Have you changed any other hardware or software since this problem began? Also, what chipset do you have?

Currently running windows 98, motherboard is nvidia nforce chipset, no i havent made any changes to the system since this problem began, which is why i cant really work out what is causing it. the motherboard manufacturers belive it is the agp driver, they recomended to download a new one from nvidia, gonna try that and see what happens. thanks for your help.

Just out of interest if the AGP slot on the motherboard was faulty would it affect both 2D/3D display, such as within windows or would it just affect the 3D display when running a game? Thanks for your help.

XP 2500, DFI Lanparty motherboard, 764 megs of ram, and a geforece fx 5200.

764MB RAM....Windows 98 runs out of virtual caching addresses at 512MB, and tends to get really flaky. Drop the RAM back to 512MB or less and see if that makes any difference. I don't know if it's causing this problem, but I don't know what manner of problems it can cause either, since we don't see it often. System instability is most common.

Usually win98 performs quite well with 256-384MB, not many people bother to give it more. I'm running 256MB on my win 98 machine, don't see any need for more.

Just out of curiosity another thought was that it might be the drivers from nvidia, has anyone had problems with 53.04 driver download? Ive gone back to my old system, which is only an 850 athlon, with the fx 5200, and 458 megs of ram and the game im trying to run is fine. Trying to find differences, ony thing i can find is the motherboard types and the driver im using for the card which is the one from the CD.
