I'm think I'm steamed at MS cuz I think they got me with DirectX 8.0a. Maybe not?
I took a suggestion about buying a GeForce for my new machine. The install went beautifully but DirectX 8.0 was also installed and from that point on nothing but trouble.

If I open Explorer and click any folder or file I get:
Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll at 0167:bff7b992. I can hit details and close 4 or 5 times and then use the folder but hit another and I get the same message.

If I launch IE 5.5 sp2 I get DW15 illegal operation and will be shutdown. It does not shut down on it's own so when I close it myself I get the dreaded IE caused a fatal exception at 0167:Bff9DFFF which now requires a cold boot.

If I launch dxdiag as soon as the window pops open I get DXDIAG caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at 0167:bff7b992.

I can close that and use the diagnostics but it crashes in short order testing 3d or anything else.

Not knowing if I have the latest version installed from the Nvidia CD (it's Ver 4.08.00.0400) I downloaded the latest DirectX from MS but when I try to install it the machine goes into invalid page fault, blah blah blah again.

I can use Opera fine which is how I got the downloads but IE and explorer and even using the Start Menu is a lost cause.

I can only assume DetestX.

Anyone, Help!!!!

Since this I have installed latest NVIDIA drivers, latest VIA 4 in 1, tweaked and tried safe mode which operates OK.

Win98 with SE updates, IE 5.5 sp2, AMD Thunderbird 1gig, 256 RAM, ASUS with VIA chipset, Nvidia e-geforce2 MX 400 64 MB on board.

Here is the edited version of DXDIAG:

When did all this start, what program or driver did you put on there , that right after it you put it on there it starting doing all the illegal stuff? If it started after a particular update uninstall it see what happens. Also give us some more info , moboard, processer, os, if its agp?

All of that is in the original post, please re-read. I can't, withoutusing 3rd party software, uninstall DirectX. I'd rather not do that unless necessary.

griffinspc....

Very obvious DirectX 8.0a is causing the grief. It's a clash with drivers.

I use version 6.1a and get along. Doesn't seem to clash especially with my GeForce2.

8.0a was not a MS better idea.

Luck.

A quick question...do you have any USB devices on this machine?

A USB connected scanner although right now I haven't physically got it connected the software has been installed and knows where to look for it, why?

Your problem sounds familiar - actually the reason I ended up doing a format and reinstall on a new machine because I had messed things up so badly trying to fix it.

...I have installed latest NVIDIA drivers, latest VIA 4 in 1,
<snipped>
Win98 with SE updates, IE 5.5 sp2, AMD Thunderbird 1gig, 256 RAM, ASUS with VIA chipset, Nvidia e-geforce2 MX 400 64 MB on board.

I have Win98 with SE updates, IE 5.5 sp2, PIII 1gig, 512 RAM, VIA chipset, Nvidia e-geforce2 MX 400 32MB. I believe as part of the VIA 4 in 1 there is an option for TURBO. That turned out to be the culprit in my system.

Here is my suggestion assuming the DirectX 8.0a has not been corrupted in your attempts at repair. If you are in doubt about its validity reinstll it first, as the NVidia needs a DirectX, and as you have found you cannot uninstall once installed. Download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp
Remove the NVidia Display driver, through Add/Remove programs.
Reinstall the VIA 4 in 1 driver in STANDARD mode.
Install the Nvidia driver.
You may have some reboots in the above. If all goes well you should be okay. I was told I could then reinstall the 4 in 1 at Turbo... but that didn't do it for me (open GL savers and a few other items caused lock up) so I simply reinstalled at standard. All are running okay now.

I don't have DX8.0a or a Geforce card, but I was getting the exact same error (not quite as bad or often) with USB enabled (a USB modem)...I now have the modem swtiched over to serial mode and USB disabled and the error is gone...I'm running 98se and I just stsrted trying to figure it out, but I think it could be an interaction between the USB and some other device, and not showing up as a conflict.

Worked all weekend and here's the answer (I Think):
The solution turned out to be a combination of DirectX 8 and Media Player 7.1.

It may just be Media Player and not 8 but I want to run for awhile before I try to re-install 8. I uninstalled it and replaced it with X7 but also rid myself of Media Player when it was apparent that that was not the sole solution and Media Player 7.1 was installed at the same time.

Curiously when I un-installed Media 7.1, the old 6.4 immediately bacame active again which I had thought was overwritten. I took the old Goodtime.mpg file from MS Win95 and played it with 6.4 on my wife's machine, full screen, no problems. Then I installed 7.1 and played it and it skipped and distorted the image and audio match up.

I uninstalled 7.1, 6.4 reappeared and played the file perfectly.

If you have problems as I had you may want to check into Media 7.1 as the culprit. As I said I want to run a little while then re-install DirectX 8 without 7.1 and see what happens.
