View Full Version : SDRam Address Error ...?

When I upgraded my system earlier this year (yes I finally got it up and running after a few problems) I installed 512 SDRAM which has been terrific, especially from the old 64 RAM.

Recently I was doing some maintenance on my system, backing up, defrag, etc. I ran a Norton Diagnostics test and got an error on my SDRAM memory. The test said it failed as it found an error at address 207499264. I tried it again and got the same message.

I went inside and cleaned the contacts and reinstalled. Tried the test again and got a different error address - 2220164096. In my system properties, it recognizes 512 RAM. I have three (3) slots and I have two (2) 128PC100 and one (1) 256PC100 and all three are different manufacturers. Would this cause a problem? Or should I just ignore it because I really don't seem to have a problem with it?

What do you think? I have heard many mixed messages about Norton ... so I'm not sure ... maybe it's nothing. Thanks for your advice!

I personaly don't have much use for all these third party utilities. To me, they just take up space, and do things that are already built into your OS. But thats not what you were asking was it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
As for the error report, if everything is working, I wouldn't bother with it to much.
You might try the diagnostic with only one stick at a time and see what you get.
If you get the error consistantly on one in perticuler, it may be getting ready to go. But like they same back home, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I kind of remember seeing something about Norton and large amounts of memory...take a look through the support section at Norton's site...sorry don't have the link handy right now.

Hey there Computer Deb,

I had a similar problem with 512 Mb od DDR Ram and Norton, but MJC was able to help me with this advice:

Go to the run box and type in sysedit...then look in the system.ini file and see if you have a MaxFileCache line...if so change the value to something like 524288 or even smaller (can be approxiamately 1/4 of your installed memory or if using 512MB about 131072 or less). If the line isn't there cut and paste this, in the section titled [vcache]:
MinFileCache=131072
MaxFileCache=524288

This sorted most of the problems out however my system did still tend to crash every now and again, however once I uninstalled Norton System(never)works everything was fine.

Hope this helps,

The Prawn

Why is it that I hear more bad things about Norton System Works than good. I got an error message when I was online last night that said I didn't have enough memory (for something... don't remember what) for my Norton AntiVirus to run ...I have 512 RAM and 4 gig free on my primary hard drive. How does it determine that? ... go figure ... I will check out the Norton site.

If I do uninstall my Norton SystemWorks, what do recommend for various utilities? Just my WIN98SE?

Thanks,

Computer Deb!

For defragging use Disk Keeper 6.0 and partitioning use Partion Magic. they both work on 98/2000.

It seems that most of the problems with Norton seem to be occurring in high RAM machines.

And what parts of System Works do you regularly use?
