I only have one phone line so I have my modem set to disconnect call waiting, but when someone calls while "on line" they still hear my phone ring, and I suspect that it disconnects me. I did not have this problem on my old p.c.;
win ME, win lucent modem. Let me know if you need any more info.

Lucias,
What kind of modem did your old PC have?
If it was ans external or ann ISA hardware mode then I suspect that your problem has nothing to do with call waiting but to the fact that softwae modems (winmodems) are more suseptable to line noise and therefore more frequently disconnect. ( I have kind of the opposite problem...I want to disconnect on call waiting, I now have my have hardware modem set so sensitively, in order to hear the call waiting signal, I get disconnected from line noise on occasion.)
When you set the call waiting off the telco is the one that interprets it and doesn't pass the incoming call on to you, so it is all done before it actually hits your connection.
Also double check to make sure you are using the correct shut off sequence for your area.

mjc I had the same type of modem 'lucentwin' don't know if it was a differant model. The reason I say this is because usally when I get disconnected the after a few seconds the phone rings.
