I have just installed win 98 on an amd k6 233 There is no available irq for the sound card ide controller but cd- rom is slaved off of hard drive so i don't see this as a problem. However I had a "PCI communication error no driver installed" when i manully installed driver and ran diagnostic it could not open port. I installed an irq routing patch and i no longer got the error opening port but it is still not detecting modem. next step is to test modem in another machine. if no joy the other suggestion I had was to reinstall 98 with modem and sound card removed then add modem then add sound card. Any other suggestions? Thanks

I had the same problem in 98SE. I had to install my modem about five time before I could get it to work, including removing moden from PCI slot and putting it back. 98Se was putting it on com 1 and in bois I had it set for com 3, after trying and trying finnaly got it on com 3, for me this worked, I know it was a pain. Check back I am sure someone will come up with some more help. Best of luck to you. You want your moden on com 3 or 4. Try moving sound card to differant PCI slot, try them all.

Curious if this is a Hardware or a Software modem? When you say there is no available IRQ what exactly do you mean? Are you using PnP or manually assigning/reserving IRQs in the BIOS?

sorry for taking so long to respond, you know how work can get in the way sometimes! Thanks for your questions, they helped guide me in the right direction.
Number 1 - internal lucent winmodem is pooched.
Number 2 - She doesn't use it!
Number 3 - She uses an external usb modem
Number 4 - Sound card IDE controller says "The device can not find any free irq resources to use" troubleshooter suggests disabling usb controller to free up irq. controller requires 10 11 or 15. currently 9 and 12 are free. Can i manually assign one of these two irq's to the ide controller without too much trouble? currently this controller is not in use so it is not a big deal at the moment, but a second hard drive may be in the works shortly. Hope this helps and thanks again everyone for your assistance.

If the motherboard has an onboard IDE controller and the CD rom is an IDE device why do you need the sound card's controller?

Can't you just disable it?

Yes I could disable it but then how would I add a second hard drive?

OK, I see what you are up against, the motherboard has only one on-board IDE controller, right?

I also take it that this is an ISA sound card? How many slots and what is in them?

What IRQs are currently in use...and what is on them.

See my previous post for irq's in use and available. I don't have it in front of me now but I believe there was 3 isa and 4 pci, or vice versa. I did try switching the cards to different slots and then tried (as Amd recommended) re install operating system without modem and sound card installed, then add one at a time. Everything is working fine now including the sound card, except for the ide controller on the sound card. Thanks again for your patience and advice. I have learned more from this discussion board in a week, than a month at school.

Are you using the on board serial ports. If not, you can disable them in the bios and pick up 2 irq's. Then you can move things around to accomplish your goal.

Thanks will try that, but now it is reporting a bunch of missing files on boot up, I'll have to find out exactly what, but it seems to be running ok

Reference your last.

The HDD and CD-ROM don't play together well on the same ribbon cable.

Luck.
