How long does a photograph last on cd-r or cd-rw media? How about a Kodak PhotoCD?

I have read somewhere that it is a hundred or more years. That is unless a certain Mr Gates decides otherwise http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

The actual picture file will last indefinitely. The keys are the media on which you have it stored and the format of the file.

As long as your cd, floppy, zip, hard drive, etc retains its integrity... the file will be read the same tomorrow as today - provided you have hardware capable of reading that media and a program capable of reading that format.

I don't know what the shelf life is of a floppy, zip, or CD. Of course I wouldn't keep my only copy on a HD (was only mentioned to ignite your thought processes.)

CD-R will outlast CD-RW. How long is that? I don't think anyone knows, they haven't been around long enough. Longer than the useful life of the hardware that supports them, I'll wager. (IBM punchcards, anyone?)

The variables that are known to breakdown cdr media include but not limited to include heat, humidity, sunlight and the laser.

Where else would you rather be than right here right now

Good point, Gallaeglagh; I wouldn't leave CD-Rs on the dashboard of my car. Another threat is corrosion of the reflective layer.
