View Full Version : Help- Win install fails computer freezes (cpu speed?)

KB412

I recently bought parts to build a system. (1.4ghz athlon 266FBS, ASUS KT266A DDR, 256 2100 DDR, quantum fireball plus AS 40g ata100 7200rpm, atx case w/300w power)(plus an older ati expert@play pci video card) from what I understand there should be no conflicts with the hardware.

So this is a new system, It usually boots fine, Im booting with the win98 cd, when I get to the instaliation for 98 and start it at random times during the very begining of the install the machine either just freezes or it freezes and displays text (ascii and "comm2" "comm3" and "comm4", or just random numbers) It displays these for a few seconds and then restarts) most of the time it goes into the bois on restart with a "during the last boot-up, your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting" message, Im not sure why this is happining, if anyone has an idea please let me know, I have been trying to get this this to work for at least a month now.

Is my processor overheating, is the vcore set to the wrong setting(what is the right setting?) any help would be appreciated.

Welcome kb
Put the jumper on jumper free mode, also make sure the vcore jumper is on .
Another thing is to disable the serial ports in your bios, unless your using them for a old modem or something. try that and post back and let us knowww something

Like you said be4, it could be a heat issue also. What kind of heatsink do you have, was it put on correctly. Try this link, to solve your heat related issues http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000386.html
