I have two slots for memory. One came filled with the 56mb from the factory. Added a 256mb stick of the same pc133 memory in the second slot without moving the original. Now after about 2 hrs of use the system locks up (no blue screen error message). No overheating issues. Does it matter how you position the memory??. Did this upgrade to another HP 850 running ME with no issues. The system recognizes the mem as 311 instead of 312. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to put the higher memory in the first slot. and as far as it not reading the full there is an alottment for the vidio card i beilieve. So just switch slots that should do it.

What brand of memory did you install? Try Yoda's suggestion, but this is a classic symptom of a bad DIMM.

Expanding on the "missing" memory answer: Certain onboard video chipsets grab a certain number of megabytes, depending on the resolution and number of colors selected. (The "56MB" slot physically contains 64MB.) My old Presario would lose 1MB, even with the onboard video disabled. The maximum system memory used for onboard video was 8MB. I don't have an explanation for why you're seeing 311MB, I'd expect 256+64-8= 312MB.

Hi Cheetah,

I can't remember there have ever been a 56 MB memory chip. I believe you have had a bad memory chip in your computer from the beginning.

I think it's been like that since you first had your computer and you have always been missing some memory. The thing that strange is that when you add 258 and 56 you come out to a memory amount of about 311 which is what your computer was saying you have and you haven't been having any problems that will cause you to come to a forum like this.

If you go to Hewlett-Packard's web site I'm sure you will see, that your computer should have had 64 MB of memory.

But, if it isn't causing any other problems, just leave it in there and work with your 311 MB of memory and forget about the 8 MB you're missing.

Good luck

Yes I'm so sorry. That was supposed to read 64 meg. Oops. Why do they put that 5 so close to the six when a guy is typing http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif. But it does still show 311 vs. 312 for some reason. I swapped the chips and so far so good. I'll keep you posted if the problems persist. Also a quick note to thank everyone for their fast, knowledgable answers here. I have not posted much, but I read a ton of useful info here. Thank you.

Cheetah:

Do you have memory hole 15M-16M enabled in your bios (address space for ISA expansion cards). This would explain the missing 1M.

It is an HP, won't know and won't be a way to disable the memory hole, but I believe it does have one....the BIOS setting s are very limited on what can be changed on an HP.
