View Full Version : 2 computers on network cannot see each other

I am attempting to enable file sharing between two computers running windows 98se. I have an ADSL modem hooked up to a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router (BEFSR41). Both computers have no problem accessing the internet. I believe my problem has to do with settings within the router, but am not sure.
Right now after fiddling around all day, each computer shows up on it's own Network Neighborhood but not on each other's - although for no reason that I can figure out earlier today the computer with the modem and router showed itself and the other computer and I was able to browse the enabled shared folders on the other computer.

I'm getting a headache from this! Let me know what else you need to know so hopefully I can get this LAN setup correctly.

I'm assuming you're using DHCP. This allows you to let the computers obtain an IP address automatically and should rule that out for now.

Check to make sure both computers have file and printer sharing enabled on both comps (I know it has to be on the one you were able to access over the network.

Make sure they are both set to the same workgroup.

Scan both systems with an updated virus scan (see my AVG link below if you don't have one) and grab spybot as well if you don't have that.

Try that for now, and I'm sure others will come with more suggestions.

Also make sure each computer is named a unique name and not that of the workgroup.

Thanks for replies. I have Spybot and no viruses. Computer names are unique and have same workgroup.

When I set up the router I spent over an hour with a tech rep to get the router to work with the ADSL modem. We had to change the router's IP address if I recall correctly. It was a convoluted process that I couldn't reproduce on my own, so forgive me if I blather. I'll try to present all the data in an organized way.

The first computer named Uriel (which has modem and router initially set up on it):
using winipcfg shows:
Host name: Uriel
DNS Server: 4.2.2.1
Node Type: Broadcast
NetBios Resolution Uses DNS is "checked"
Ethernet Adapter info:
Adapter Address: 00-30-BD-06-69-31
IP address 10.10.10.25
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 10.10.10.1
DHCP Server: blank

Uriel's Control Panel\Network Neighborhood\TC/IP Properties:
IP Address tab is set to "specify IP address" which shows the IP address and Default Gateway as stated in winipcfg above.
The DNS Configuration tab shows DNS "enabled" with DNS Server 4.2.2.1
File and Printer sharing\Advanced\Property: Browse Master = Automatic

In the router's admin utility...
DHCP is "enabled" and the DHCP Clients table does show the second computer (TB900) with its correct Hostname (TB900), IP address (10.10.10.100) and MAC address (00-E0-4C-EB-E4-1A).

The router's Status tab says following:
LAN:
(MAC Address: 00-06-25-F5-96-CE)
IP Address: 10.10.10.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP server: Enabled

WAN:
(MAC Address: 00-06-25-F5-96-CF)
IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.252
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1
0.0.0.0
0.0.0.0

WAN connection type: Obtain IP address automatically

Second computer TB900 using winipcfg shows:
Host name: TB900
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1
Node Type: Broadcast
NetBios Resolution Uses DNS is not checked
Ethernet Adapter info:
Adaptor Address: 00-E0-4C-EB-E4-1A
IP Address: 10.10.10.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.10.10.1
DCHP Server: 10.10.10.1

TB900's Control Panel\Network Neighborhood\TC/IP Properties:
IPAdress tab is set to "obtain IP address automatically"
The DNS Configuration tab shows DNS "disabled"
File and Printer sharing\Advanced\Property: Browse Master = Automatic

Have following installed on Network:
Client for Microsoft Windows
NIC card
NetBeui
TC/IP
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

Primary Logon is Client for Microsoft Networks

What should be the default protocol? NetBeui or TC/IP?

This is everything I can think of...a lot to look at. I appreciate any input to straighten this out.

Also, if you have any firewalls that may be causing the problem.

Can you ping the computers from each other?

Can you map a network drive drive using UNC.

To Test

Make a folder on machine uriel called test

Rt click on the folder and choose sharing.

Share as test

from the other computer

rt click on Network neighborhood.

Select map network drive

after selecting the drive

type in the box \\uriel\test

If you get no error message

look in my computer and the sahred drive should be listed.

Post back with results.

Thank you to the folks who replied.

I dug deeper into my router and fiddled with some of the Filter settings. I also dug into McAfee firewall and configured the ethernet adapter settings. Now both computers can see each other and all shared folders. Yippee!
