looking for an audio driver

just built a new PC not high spec etc. Mobo is Asus P4S533-MX with on board graphics and audio (soundmax digital audio). BUT the audio driver is not compatible with win98 FIRST edition .. only Win98SE .. tried to find a driver but so far have failed.

Anyone able to find a driver?

Alternative is to upgrade O/S ... but posting a different thread on that

Have you tried Soundcard drivers (http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/)
It may be that this sound card was intrioduced after Win98SE, and drivers for earlier systems were never writen.

Please don't start another thread just to ask if upgrading your OS will cure the problem. It's obvious that the mobo is not going to have drivers for an older OS such as the original 98. Do you expect someone to make them? I wouldn't want to be bothered even if I knew how.

You've actually answered your own question on this and should know what path to take.

Edit: I apologise, Someone may happen along who can instruct on how to utilize newer drivers from 98SE cab files if that is even possible...

was hoping someone might have a interesting/innovative idea . However you'll see my only o/s upgrade option is rather novel on the other thread *s*.

There shouldn't be that much of a difference that sound card drivers should be able to tell 98 from 98SE.........just grab the package for SE and try it, I'm betting it will work.

Was hoping that was going to be the case. The driver come package in a install programme that detects the O/S and refuses to load.

When I try to install the driver manually .... I get to the .ini file, select it, window comes up and says it's compatible with the Soundmax hardware...BUT ... the when you press install ... it says it can't install that driver.
