Disabling On-Board SOund

I have an ASUS A7N8X-X with on-board sound. If I want to install my SB Live! do I have to disable the on-board sound first or will installing a sound card do it automatically?

You need to go into the Bios and disable the onbaord first.
The exit the bios and save the settings.

If you already have drivers for it loaded in windows let the system finish booting and go into device manager and remove the Old / onbaord sound devices
If they have a uninstall for the drivers and or other programs
Remove them as well.

It is also a good idea to boot up in safe mode to remove the onboard sound devices ..

Then shut the system down.
Unplug the power cord.
Press the power button on the case ( to discharge the capacitors on the motherboard )
Open the case and install your Soundblaster

Put the case back together and boot it up..

By removing and disabling the onboard first
You avoid and conflicts between the two chips

Realizing that this is your first build, are you using any other PCI cards in your new setup?

If you are, which PCI slot you choose to place your Sound Card into could be important!

I'm not using any other PCI cards. Which Slot should I install? I put it into the 2nd from the bootom to give more room to the AGP Video Card at the top.

In your ASUS manual you would want to look for a page with the IRQ Allocation Table, or something similar.

Off hand, I would say that your third PCI slot down would be the one to try it in first.

If you have trouble getting it configured properly, you can always try another slot....

The Allocation Table, though, might give you some insight into which slot you would want to try initially...

You would need to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS...

Also, be ready with the drivers for the SB to insert when called for...
