View Full Version : Internet Explorer 6 Problem

Need help with Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) launch.
I am running Windows 2000Pro.
When I am signed on in my regular user name and I click on the IE6 icon it does absolutely nothing. When I am logged on as Administrator IE6 works just fine.
The IE6 browser launched just fine in my user name until a few days ago. I really don't know what precipitated the problem. I am not the only user of this user account. Additionally, I use Microsoft Outlook and it still works, I receive all my messages. When I'm in a mail message with a url link and I click on it, Notepad pops up with this message: "The file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect".
I've compared the properties between user and Administrator in IE6 and they are the same.
I know I can make up a new user account and IE6 will work but it is a real pain to set up my mail account again with all the rules, etc that go along with it.
Anybody know of an easy fix?

I guess the first thing I would do turbot would be to run all of my spyware, malware, antivirus, trojan programs and then get HiJack This and post a log for the guru's to take a look at. They may be able to find something in that. Hang around the real geniuses will come by soon to help.

Just to be thorough, and because it won't take much effort, try logging on using your regular user name, hold the Windows key and press R to open up the Run dialog box, punch in "IEXPLORE" (without the quotes) and hit Enter. What happens?
If that doesn't do it, and if you've made no major software additions or removals recently, LadyGrey is on the right track - a good scrubbing is prolly in order.

Thanks for the replies Lady Grey and pentachris,
I ran Spybot, Adaware, and Norton Antivirus 04.
Also ran IE6 repair. Ran SFC (sfc /scannow).
Typed IEXPLORE in the Run dialog box and clicked OK -
nothing happened.
My daughter downloaded RealOnePlayer a couple of weeks
ago and after the problem surfaced (2/26/04) she removed it.
My logfile follows:

You have one definite malware and one that many consider to be malware. The first one below is considered to be spyware by many because it is designed to tell you when an update for a product is available for purchase and it apparently reports on what you have on your system in the meanwhile. I recommend fixing both with HJT. To do so, close all open windows and your browser, open HJT and mark/fix these:
O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/26f48fd...ip/RdxIE601.cab
I'd also suggest getting rid of this, but it is not technically malware. It is part of WildTangent which is often termed foistware because it pushes itself and related products on you:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wcmdmgr] C:\WINNT\wt\updater\wcmdmgrl.exe -launch
If you choose to fix that, you need to also remove this folder (in bold):
C:\WINNT\wt\updater\wcmdmgr.exe
Once you complete the fixes, reboot and run HJT to post a new log here....

IE6 does not launch under my regular sign in.

Your log looks clean, but you haven't updated your IE to SP1. I suggest doing that and see if it makes a difference for your problem....

Entering IEXPLORE in Run cmd doesn't open IE6.
I attempted to install IE6 SP1 and received the following:
"The download information is damaged. Please clear your
IE browser cache and retry setup".
How do I do this? Should I delete the downloaded SP1 and
download it again?

Under Tools, Internet Options you will find the option of clearing cache, cookies and history. Opt to clean out offine content as well. You will have to login again on sites like this, but you may be better off clearing it all out at this point. Then try the install. If it still doesn't work, use Windows Update to try again....

Even after clearing out the cache and the cookies, I have seen this message keep coming back until the pc was rebooted.
Since Administrator can open IE the problem, as you originally indicated, seems likely to be a user-rights problem. I have always had problems understanding/configuring how individual programs can be assigned these rights but some peeps round here may well know the answer.

I cleaned out the cache, cookies, history, and offline content.
I downloaded and installed recommended windows updates. I re-did
the install of SP1. It still doesn't work.
I don't know if I discovered something significant or not but while
signed in under my user name I can right click on the Start button, select Explore and scroll to the bottom of the folders file and
click on the IE icon and IE launches successfully. However I cannot
create a shortcut from this location that will work from the desktop.

I believe I mis-spoke in my last post.
When I downloaded all the recommended Windows updates
from Microsoft's site I think I did receive IE6 SP1.
My current version is: 6.02800.1106
shanmuga
03-05-2004, 01:16 AM
That's right, version 6.02800.1106 is IE6 SP1. Did it solve your problem?
turbot

No IE6 SP1 did not solve my problem.
Nothing has changed. I still can't launch
IE from Start, Programs, or from the IE icon
or shortcut from my desktop. When I click on the
icons absolutely nothing happens. When I right click
on Start, and scroll down to the IE icon and click
on it then IE opens and I'm on the internet but that's
not the solution to the problem. It's not the normal
way to enter the internet and I can't make a shortcut to it.

Try running the IE repair feature from within IE 6.....
turbot
03-06-2004, 11:27 AM
I ran IE repair again and this time it worked.
My IE icon on the user desktop is functioning as it should.
I didn't see an option within IE to run IE repair.
So while IE was open (remember I was able to open the browser
by right clicking on start, selecting Explore, and scrolling
to the bottom of the folders list and clicking on the IE icon)
I opened the Control Panel and in Add/Remove Programs I ran the fix. It worked!
I ran the fix for IE before from the Control Panel but the
IE browser wasn't open and it didn't work.
Life is good again. Persistance pays off.
Thank you everyone for your help.
