I'm having problems updating my Norton Antivirus definitions. The package downloads ok, but during instalation I get errors. Is this me or are others having similar dificulties? I checked symantecs site but they don't have any signs up about liveupdate beeing broken...
(btw: I just installed it 4 months ago so my subscription should be ok, no software / hardware changes were made prior to the problems)

This will happen on occasion. Please keep running live update until you are completely updated.

It often happens.
Make sure you are logged on as the user who installed the Norton AV, and run liveupdate from there to be sure.
Norton tend to get hit a lot by virus writers, trying to block the update site - as well as trying to disable norton on people's systems.
If you go to the download site at symantec.com, select update virus definitions (intelligent updater) you will find a current virus definition package which you can download, double click on, and have that update your virus definitions.
There are also known problems due to the activation required in the latest versions of norton av/systemworks etc.

I tried donwloading it from the site (as oposed to liveupdate) and the same happened: downloading went fine, installing went wrong. I'm thinking about dropping NAV and switching to AVG (not just for the updates, norton is pretty heavy to run as well), but I seem to remember that removing NAV is not easy.
At the moment I have the full Norton Systemworks 2004 installed. I'd like to keep all the featurs, except the antivirus. Any special hints on how to approach this?

If I remember correctly, (per Nortons instructions), you must completely uninstall NSW2004 including Live-Reg and Live-update via Control Panel add/remove....(Re-Boot).
Then, re-install via the NSW CD. You will then have options on which components to install. (You can then leave out NAV completely in the initial set-up screen)
Speaking of a huge resource hog though.....It's not just Norton AV, but I found that NSW in general is an amazing resource hog. I used to swear by it a long time ago, but getting rid of it made my Computer a whole lot faster in every way.
(It's still handy to run some of the utilities directly off the CD on occasion though, so I still have it kicking around).
Since you'll be keeping most of the Program, you don't have to worry too much about getting rid of all the remnants.....Which is quite a task indeed.
You may want to go to Symantecs Web site and look around in the help section a little bit though to verify my advice.
(Edit) A little after thought...If you still want to use NAV, reinstalling may fix the problem you're having too.
Funny- Back when I had it, I wanted to uninstall everything EXCEPT the AV...Just the opposite of your intentions.. (And I used above procedure)

Well, here's what went down:
I uninstalled NAV by inserting the systemworks disc and simply modifying the install I had (you can pick the bits and peaces you want to keep / dump, just like you can with office). Since I was keeping most of the stuff, I didn't bother with de-contaminating the registry & such.
After this, I installed AVG, which worked fine for about a day. Then it refused to update claiming "a file is missing, please contact your sysadmin" or somesuch.
Feeling somewhat unhappy with this situation, I decieded to throw away AVG and try NAV again, which is working fine. For the moment... (insert suspense-ic music here)
So on first sight, a reinstall has indeed "done the trick" Jabar. ;)
I ran the online virus-scans at symantec btw, and they came up clean, which I think is totaly rad and truly spaz! :D
Hope the silly thing goes on to be a good little camper from now on...

Glad it worked out for you Abbadon!
There were times I had problems with NAV updates and uninstalling and reinstalling always seemed to fix the problem when all else failed.
I'm not familiar with the 2004 version-(They usually don't change too much ), but I know when i used it, if you were having a problem with live update (or installing updates), their last suggestion was to completely remove NAV...including "LiveReg" and "liveUpdate" in add/remove, then reinstall.
You should be all set now. You've got the subscription...May as well use it!
BTW- I still think Symantec is excellent about keeping on top of this stuff.....It's just, like you mentioned, a bit of a resource "hog" and difficult to get rid of completely if you ever want too.
