Good idea!! Got mine from local computer shop they had a few of them just laying around. Give it a try. Also gave me Peter Nortons book on DOS 6.22, outstanding book. Most techs now days do not think much of DOS, because of this you should not have hard time finding, ask around.

Thanks Jiggy, thanks Andy,
Like you, Andy, a guy gave me a book about dos 6.22. I've noticed that the version that comes with win98se (7.0?) doesn't use all the same commands.
With all the talk about dos in the forums lately I decided to try and learn what I've been avoiding for quite a while. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
All suggestions welcome, thanks again.

The win9x kernel still rides atop a DOS interface mostly for cmpatibility with older programs; you have to remeber that when win95 was introduced DOS was still the major player in the game.
The reason ist's missing some of the commands is because you don't need them; it is far easier for people to point and click ( hencethe friendly GUI idea ) than to type a specific command.
I've seen full versions of DOS on Ebay for around $5.00; not bad considering i paid $50 for it brand new oh somany years ago. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
It's still a necessary thing for any PC tech minded person to know DOS commands. In the NT world you have a virtual 32bit DOS emulator ( ntvdm.exe ) called up by using the CMD at your prompt ( or for those who like to click on things, at your shortcut in start/programs menu ).
By the way, 6.22 was the last official release of MSDOS.

Thanks Yoda, thanks iisbob,
Geeezz... you'd think that after all this time it'd be free. But I guess $5 or $10 isn't to bad.
I'm sure I'll find a copy. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks for the history, iisbob. You must be as old as Pete! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

If you want it for free.
Try Dr DOS 7.1 below.
Yes even in the days of dos we were looking something that wasn't
the MS idea of how to do things.

Hi Rick,
Of course I want it for free. But hey, somebody has to help Bill become a trillionaire.
I think 7.1 is what I got. It's the version that comes with win98se? It's funny. The basic prompt is c:\windows> instead of c:\> like in other versions. And not all the commands work.
Well, like iisbob said, 6.22 is the last official ms version and that's what I'm lookin' for.

DR Dos is another companies version of DOS
The version you have with Windows 98 (7.) Is not the same.
The largest difference between MS dos and DR dos are the commands and switches for those commands.
It allows you to do more with many of the commands.
It works just like the MS version of dos. Just more a little more useful .

Steve, I put DOS 6.22 on 1/2 gig hard drive and hooked it up to a promise card. When I want to use it change bios to boot to scsi, which the promice card is known by bios, do not know why. I did this it hopes I would not mess up my system playing with DOS. Best to you and all.

Hey Andy,
If you haven't messed up your system yet... you're not playin' around enough! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Don't worry. It can all be fixed.....

Actually MS-DOS was bought by Bill Gates and business partners, as something to present to IBM...the original name was Q-DOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System--I think) and it was fully paid for ($10,000 not quite sure on that figure any more either -- not alot by todays standards, but in the late 70's and early 80's it was a fair price). It was developed into a fairly workable system through the joint efforts of MS and IBM. Then sometime in the mid to late 80's a split took place between them and IBM ended up with IBM DOS and everyone else got MS-DOS (which at the time of the split were actually the same thing--just name changes).

To add to mjc's comments, yes DOS was purchased by Gates after he promised IBM an OS for their new IBM PC, (XT machines at 4.77MHz!) and was not quite finished. Gates and company put on the finishing touches and leased it to IBM for their use, and IBM was able to put their name on it.
IBM called it PC-DOS and Microsoft's name was MS-DOS, but both were written by MS and essentially the same OS.
It's funny. The basic prompt is c:\windows> instead of c:\> like in other versions.
Type CD\, that's the command to go back to the root directory, which is C:\>. By default the MS-DOS prompt opens with the command prompt in the WINDOWS directory. True DOS, 6.22 and earlier, should start at the C:\> prompt unless you send it elsewhere by way of autoexec.bat, like adding the win command as the last line to start win3.x at bootup.
