I am looking to network my laptop and desktop computers but I really have no idea what I need to do this or how. I just got DSL through verison/MSN, I would like to go wireless but I'm not sure what equipment I need. Please help.

First, do you need to share files or just share the DSL connection?
Second, do any of the laptops have Centrino chips?

:D

I re-read your profile, the Centrino laptop answer is no.

You would need either a wireless access point and wireless cards for each computer
OR
a wireless DSL router and wireless cards for each computer
OR
A combination of wired/wireless.

It is not hard to set up if the wireless is from the same vendor for all.
It is harder to set wireless networks up securely than wired networks because it transmits outside of the walls of most buildings. You will want to turn on encription and maybe even set up a table of authorized addresses to keep others off your connection and out of your computer network.

I am having a simlar dilemma in that i want to purchase a Acer laptop with built in wireless card (Acer 2001wlci)

Now im getting confused with what hardware i need to share my existing Broadband connection from my desktop pc so that i can access the web from the laptop.

My current theory is to get a wireless router, plug that into my adsl line and then have to have a wireless usb connector for my desktop and use the wireless card in the laptop to connect to the router.

But i dont really want to buy a wireless usb adapter for my pc, just to share my existing connection to the laptop using a wireless router. Could i not connect the router to the pc and share it that way?

See im a little confused!

Give me a pc to build and im fine but networking opens a new can of worms that i cant seem to get my head around.

Any ideas?

jimmyca69,
It would be better to start a new thread and explain what your setup is rather than piggybacking on this existing thread. That being said:

What kind of setup do you have now?
Do you have a NIC card in your desktop PC?
Is your broadband going just to the desktop or is it a router? USB?

I believe you only need a wireless access point to make things work but we need all the above to figure out for certain what choices you would have.

The Acer model you are talking about has integrated Centrino wireless capability in the chip so no card involved at all, FYI.
