Internet Explorer Script error

URL file/C:WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Anybody? Any ideas? Have I been hijacked?

Try here (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) to Scan your computer online for free. Do you have windows XP? Have you tried system restore?
If you have windows 98se then hit f8 on bootup and type
scanreg/restore for a configuration that worked before this happen to your computer. Although if it cant restore to the date the first time then try another date.
Cya
I have Win ME, you couldn't pay me to have Xp. Well, if you paid me,... I tried the House Call but it wouldn't download the active update, took forever to get to 90% then it cancelled, said try again later, busy server. I'll try again later.
So far today no screen freeze. If it happens again I'll post a HijackThis scan.

Right, Sorry about that, I must have hit new thread accidentally. I did a Hijackthis scan, as follows:

Your log looks clean to me, but your IE is out of date. You need to install SP1 and whatever other critical updates are available for WinME and IE. You are vulnerable otherwise and could even have an infection that isn't showing in HJT....

OK I'm wondering if this is not related to Internet...Do you have windows set to use Active Desktop? If so it sees the desktop as a webpage. The error message you posted is linked to the path
URL file/C:WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
\Desktop.htt
I'll have to do some checking but I think that should be file://C:/etc but if that's just a typo it shouldn't be a problem. If the actual error message is exactly like that, you may have a deeper problem than just a corrupted file...
Anyway if the file pointed to in that path is corrupt or missing, you would get a similar error message, and since it's a script error it could have been something trying to install itself and didn't complete, (or couldn't)
From what little I found so far it seems Active Desktop creates a new copy of desktop.htt every time you change the desktop, so you might try changing backgrounds or turning Active Desktop off then back on, if you really want active desktop...it takes more resources than the regular non-html desktop.
Hi pete:
Something you said struck a cord...I have some new pics for my screen saver (series of pics in My Pictures file), and I have been changing the background a lot lately just trying out the new pics to see which ones I like. I wonder if that could have some bearing on this, particlularly since I was trying 3 or 4 per day...right click on desk top, click, properties, shows screen functions etc. How do I check to see if Win is set to active desktop?
The second time the error box came up I checked "no" as in 'do not run scripts on this page' which struck me as funny, like, I was thinking: 'this is desk top, what page?' As to whether I copied it correctly, file://c:/ I could very well have typoed, and it hasn't come back since I checked off "no", neither has screen freeze happened since then.
Budfred: what is SP1 and where do I get it. When I bought the disk wipe from Compaq they said they had an update disk for Win Me on Compaq PCs, but can I get same from Win update sites for free?
Thanks everyone//Donn

SP1 is the update to IE and it is likely that there are updates to WinME as well if you don't have SP1. You get it by using Windows Update or by going to the MS site and searching for updates. It is easier to use Windows Update, but you only download the installers that way and have to go back and do it again if you reformat. If you search for updates and download the full version, you can store it on a CD and use it later, but it is more hassle finding them and picking which ones you need. Without the updates, you are vulnerable to a number of worms and other security issues....
Budfred, thanks for that. I'll go look for updates.
Two things to ask about: 1. When I run Adaware it jumps from 4818 files checked to 20,016 in an instant. When I ran House Call it ran 14K+ files. I ran it twice--same result, but when I ran AVG it totaled 24K+ files. Should these variances be? 2. When you download you're supposed to disable your Anit-Virus, right? Does that mean before download or ebfore install? Also, on Grisoft AVG free edition, when I right click on the navbar icon I get a box with: "Run AVG Control Center" "Run AVG Anti-Virus" "ShutDown AVG Control Center." Is clicking on "ShutDown AVG Control Center" sufficient to shutdown the anti-virus, or should I uninstall it before downloading or installing?
Thanks//Donn

First: PLEASE do not turn off your antivirus when downloading and it is a good idea to never turn it off when online, except possibly when running an online virus scan... You can turn it off when installing a new program, but I make sure I am offline before I do that...
I am not sure why AdAware would jump like that. I would run Spybot to make sure it isn't missing anything... It may just be that it was scanning it all, but didn't show it in the window and then seemed to jump ahead...
I am guessing that the difference between the AV scans is that they were scanning at different levels. When I run a deep scan it can take a good half hour or so, but I can choose to just scan one file or directory or drive or whatever.... I can also choose what types of files to scan...

The ONLY time you need to turn your antivirus off is while installing programs, and as Budfred mentioned maybe while running an online scan. You'll need to right click and click "Shut Down AVG Control Center", then use the 3-finger-salute (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to open Task Manager and shut down the program itself.
To specifically answer your question, no, just shutting down Control Center is not sufficient. Control Center is the AVG Configuration page where you can set preferences, make a rescue disk set (VERY good idea, mine's saved the day a number of times), set scheduling etc. The option if you right click the tool tray icon only shuts down Control Center, not AVG itself.
The difference in the number of files scanned by housecall and AVG is probably due to the different file types each is set to ignore. If you check in Control Center you'll find somewhere a section that allows you to customize the file types that are ignored. DOn't change it, but it won't hurt to look. I think extensions .txt and .jpg are set to ignore, since currently no known viruses infect these file types. Housecall may also be only scanning known critical file areas, rather than a thorough, indepth system scan. After all, it is online and an extra security measure, rather than a comprehensive antivirus solution...
Pete, got it, thanks, thanks to all. //Donn
I downloaded the updates--bizarre that Microsoft does not put up a warning...packet is downloaded turn off anti-virus and uinstall--but, whaddo I know. it left me with a desktop icon that I sent to My Documents, a ? with XML 4.0 Parser, which looks like some kind of program writing tool. Can you tell me what that is for? There was an Active X update that I did not take. From various forums and articles I am under the impression that Active X has advantages and disadvantages. Any comments on that, what it's worth etc.? I can always go back for that update.

I don't see any malware, but if it were me, I would disable this in RealPlayer:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\REAL\UPDATE_OB\RNATHCHK.EXE
I am not sure what you are talking about with updating IE and I don't know what that file is, hopefully someone else does or you can look it up in MS Knowledge Base....
