Brand new Dell Dimension 4600 system:
I get frequent (system) stop errors (blue screen) when it resumes from standby mode.
Dell recommends reducing the number of start-up items and services with msconfig.
Did someone manage resolving similar issues?

If it's brand new, I would assume that you have not added any more software.
If that is the case, then there are good grounds for getting Dell to sort it out, as a computer that will not load the manufacturers choice of programs must have something seriously wrong.

Disabling startups is at best a workaround, and at worst, merely ignores the problem.

It could also be due to malware of some type. Try this.

Please download Hijack this (http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe)
Copy it into its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, do Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Do not disable anything with MSconfig when running the scan, as the disabled items will not show up in the log.

Actually, installed Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition.
