After all day yesterday and most of last night and most of today I have decided to yell for help. I have received a KWorld V-Stream TV878RF Pro TV tuner/Capture card.
I have been working on it and can get it to capture video from S-Video and Composite too, no problem. Even looks quite nice. However there is absolutely no audio. First I tried the in line of my onboard sound but that was no go, no matter what the settings used. Then decided that maybe the onboard sound just wasn't gonna cut it so went and got my old SB Live card and reinstalled it, no hitch with that. Disabled the onboard sound and updated all the drivers for the SB and it works just great. But still no sound on preview or capture. I have used various capture programs, the ones that came with the card were just @*@*. I've used Virtual Dub, iuVCR, VirtualVCR and as the encoder I'm using TMPG but still no audio with any of them. I've been to so many sites, DVDRhelp, sourceforge for WDM drivers, they won't install for me, I can't remember where all I've been looking for information. If anyone knows anything please let me know. Thanks very much.

Did you read through these customer comments from the site you mentioned?

BT878-based cards and compatibles (there's an astounding amount of them out there) apparently need a small loopback cable which leads from the tv-in card and plugs into your sound card.
I have one of these cards as well, and so far I haven't found a 'smart' way to get the job done. If you're crafty, you can make a 2 inch long audio cable which won't get in the way in the back of your PC.

Thanks you two! I'd missed that on DVDR Whyz, I got a couple of ideas to try after reading that.
Kiosk, yep the loopback goes from audio out on the card to line in on the sound card but I still can't get it to work. I'm gonna go try a couple more things and see what happens.
Mother is going to be so disappointed if I can't get this to work, she just up and bought it for me to burn stuff of Donnie for her. Wish she had asked me first but hey at 83 I'm surprised she even knew what a capture card was, much less to go to newegg and get one!:)
I'll keep trying, thanks again!!

You might want to check the "software" connection...in Sound Properties...make sure that line-in is not muted...

Yes LG ...WYZMN brings up a good point. I went nuts once trying to get sound off a TV tuner/Capture card and it turned out to be a very simple setting within the Software for the card itself.
On mine (Which also had the simple audio loop cable mentioned by kiosk), there was an "initialization Wizard" that allowed you to pick various input settings. (Funny too....This "initialization Wizard" for SOUND options was found within the VIDEO tab settings of the Software- Go figure)
Among them were many options including CD Audio, Mike, Aux, Mono mix, Stereo Mix, and Line In .
Well, you get the idea....Until I selected Line in...No sound.
Which goes hand in hand with Whyzmans suggestion to also check the "Line in" settings on your sound card and be sure it's not Muted or turned way down.

Howdy Howdy, Just to let you know I rma'd the little stinker back to NewEgg. Thank goodness it came from there so I know I won't have any problems. I ordered another, better I hope, tuner/capture card. It should be here by Monday or Tuesday. I got a Leadtek TV2000XP Deluxe and from what I can see on their website it looks to be a good card. Lots of documentation and help. Seems to have pretty good reviews on DVDR help too. I'm gonna capture video to send to Mother if it kills me! I'll just keep trying till I find a card that will work.
Jabar I did all that too darlin, checked and rechecked every setting known. Just wouldn't give me sound. Thanks for the help everyone!!

Update !
Hello!
Got everything a goin here!! Got sound, got video, got SVCDs too that play on my DVD player!! Really a happy person here! Had no trouble at all with the Win2000XP card. It has audio in and out on it as well as S-Video and I can use my RCA jacks if needed. Nice little card, picks up my favorite radio stations too even way out here where I am! Not really into watching TV on the puter but it's nice to know I have that if needed.
I also splurged and got a DVD burner from NewEgg. Did a little research and for the price I paid I think and hope I got one that will just do the simple stuff I need. I got a NEC 2500A DVD R/RW CD R/RW for $91.00 and it came today. Got to let it warm up good before I try to do anything with it but I'm fairly sure it will be enough for what I want. My only problem is now, that my CD R-RW that belonged to my brother is gonna have to come out I guess. Still to this day don't know what it is but it's never given me a moments trouble, writes to anything I put in it, and produces disks that will play on any stereo I've ever tried. I use Nero with it and it's just a great combination. I just don't see any way of keeping it tho. My mobo will only handle 4 drives and I've got 4 now so someone has to go.
Budfred!
Thanks and thanks and thanks again for telling me about Ghost! I've got it and have had to use it three times now. I got the computer set up with all the basics I need for a fresh start and made an image as well as backed up to CD and it just works like a dream!! I've never been so pleased with a $10 purchase in my life! I got it on System Works and don't have anything else installed, Notorious Norton doesn't play nice on my computers and I've been very happy with my AVG and other programs, so if it ain't broke don't fix it!! :D
With all the messin around I've been doing with capture programs and compression, and encoding and decoding I've messed up the puter three times now! Each time Ghost has put it back to where I started and I go from there!
LG;)
p.s. Had no trouble at all with NewEgg about the other card. They did charge a restocking fee but I guess that's business now days.

I'd love to hear some of the practical details on the everyday use of ghost.
I use "Simple Backup" and I'm curious about the differences.

Hi Sylvander,
I can only tell ya how I've been using Ghost here lately. I do two things with it. I got my system, a basic running system, all the updates, you know all the stuff that takes me hours of downloading on my old dial up connection, put all my basic programs on, my camera, all the updated drivers for my cards and other programs and then I burnt CD-RWs, took about 6 and a half but that's my basic running system. Then as I go along in time I make a backup image to my second HDD. From what I understand you have to have a second HDD to do this. It won't let you backup to the same HDD, which makes sense if you think about it. After you get done with your backups you make a disc, a floppy disk and if you can at least get your computer to POST the floppy disc takes over and starts you up in the Restore program. From there you just tell it which drive or in my case partition you want to restore, where to find the file or what drive the CD is in with the backup on it and off it goes. Has worked everytime for me so far. Now, if you can't get the computer to POST I have no idea how you would get around that. I'm still new at it and haven't gotten as far as that but I'm pretty sure there is a way to get it to do that too. I'll have to do more reading.
Hope that helps some.
LG;)

6&1/2 cd-rw's? That's more than 4.2 gigs!!!
I can run my 98 machine with 1 gig easy, 1.25 tops. That's if all data is stored elswhere, mail 'in' and 'out'boxes etc also remotely stored. AAMOF, at present my OS is being run on a 700 meg partition! But it is not enough. Next time it will be bigger.
If you are on W2K, I would think 2 gigs is more than enough for your OS, Program Files and a little more fluff. Have you got Ghost set to backup the entire partition including blank space? If you plan on using it often, it might be a good idea to try to trim it down some to save time or change a setting in the program.
Think of your 'OS and programs' like you would a car. A 'Monty' if you like! :D It has the engine, steering wheel, wipers, radio etc... The passengers and luggage would represent your data. Just retrieve (open) them and do whatever with them, then return them but don't let them become a permanent fixture in the 'car' or it will bog down eventually.
Set it up like a sports car, not a bus! ;)

That's the way I do it too.
Programs = 660MB.
Windows = 565MB
AVG data = 2MB
Total = 1.2GB
C: drive is kept to a minimum.
Swap file, address book, e-mails, IE favourites, My Documents, Windows installation files, temporary internet files all kept on another physical drive.
All kinds of data files kept off the C: drive.
I have:
2 x 2 disk backup of the C: partition [1st physical drive]
1 disk backup of the D: drive [2nd physical drive]
12 disk backup of the E: partition [1st physical drive]
"Ghost" seems rather similar to "Simple Backup" but can do more?
So far as I know I cannot backup to a HDD.
Like you LG I can restore using a floppy when Windows won't boot.
Everyone has to be able to get their system to POST; no escaping that.
I like being able to backup [and restoring] partitions separately.

Sorry LG,
Gotta borrow your thread here for a bit...
Sylvander,
How do or did you relocate:
IE favourites other than just cut and pasting? Have you got it set up so if you got to Start> Favorites> that it goes to the new partition?
Same question for each of the following:
My Documents, and especially the Temporary Internet Files
I keep a file called Favorites, another called My Documents on another partition and manually transfer files to them but is there a better way? If I can streamline my OS some more it would be nice. :) The only 2 I've managed to redirect automatically is the email and swapfile.

Probably one of my old threads has this info but:
Here's hoping I can remember how I did it.
Instructions for Windows 98
1. Make new homes for "My Documents" and IE "Favourites", then use "TweakUI" to specify those new locations, then cut & paste them there.
2. Make a new folder in a location and name of your choice, then go to "IE>Tools>Internet Options>General>Temporary Internet Files>Settings>Move Folder".
Specify the folder you made as the new location.
Cut & paste the files from their default [C:\Windows\Temporary Internet files" if I remember right], to the new location.
For the information of others
3. Use "OE>Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store Folder>Change" to move the home of the e-mails for each identity used [if you use multiple identities].
4. Specify new location for a fixed size swap file using "My Computer>Properties>Perfomance>Virtual Memory>Let Me Specify..." and set min = max valuse at 1.5 to 2.5 times your RAM.
5. Re-home the [Win98] Microsoft Address Book as shown here http://tinyurl.com/2adxv .
Use the key
“HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab FileName”
to specify its new address.
Its normal home address [in Win98] is
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book.
I think I've covered everything :)

Thanks Sylvander for the info, and thanks LadyGrey for putting up with us ;)
Done all except where I need to use TweakUI. Downloaded it just now and the one for XP. Hmmm, the 9x-2k one is 155kb or so (didn't pay attention exactly other than that it is small) but the XP one is over 500kb! Wow! Almost 4x the size as the one for the others! Oink oink, no wonder XP is a 'hog' on resources!
You know, if we don't bring this thread back around to a multimedia issue, mjc or PaleoPete will probably relocate it to somewhere we can't find it!
So I'll announce my recent purchase of a Fuji S3000 digicam. I know it's not the biggest / baddest thing around but it'll do well with my needs and the price was right on! NIB for $200 +5%tax. Couldn't resist. Was planning on a bigger unit, 10x optical, was saving pennies, but when that FinePix strutted in front of me, well, I just lost ALL composure and just had to do SOMETHING! No pics yet, still reading the owners manual :) Sure beats the local newspaper though...
The cat will have flash burned retina soon enough...
Hmmm.......bit bucket is looking good.........:D

Get em mjc!! Take a gals thread and just run off with it! My my my!:D :p
We got to start a separate thread about this. I've always changed the store folder in my email (OE) but I wasn't aware I could change other things too.

I do this so that when I re-format & re-store the C: drive, all my settings and such don't jump back into the past like the other software.
They are still right up to date.
I make the software jump back so as to eliminate a software problem that has been introduced since the backup was made.
This is a great way to provide protection from all kinds of software troubles.
No matter what kind of corruption has crept in it's eliminated [there may be small exceptions that can be catered for] when a working system of software is restored.
