i m over a LAN.
I have the most recent virus definitions (NAV-2003) on my pc.
No firewall however as yet.

It is quite usual that after working on my pc for about an hour or so, the "paste" option grays out and i could not copy/move any file/text etc.
Is it a virus?
Some other folks on the same LAN r also experiencing the same problem.
My OS is Win2000 Professional.

thnx for any suggesions.

Are you up to date with the latest Service Packs and patches??

This also seems like some of the symptoms of the Blaster worm which I think makes its way through a security hole that is evident if you're not running a firewall...

Does Copy/Paste fail in all apps? or just one?

There is a chance that the contents of your clipboard have become corrupted, or locked by one of the programs you are using...

You can try closing all the programs that would use the clipboard (Office, email, etc) and the open Notepad. Once Notepad is open try pasting. If that doesn't work try copying a single letter or number to the clipboard, do it by highlighting the character and ctrl-c...

Also, does are reboot or re-login fix the problem?

copy/ paste fails in copying folders/files and in Power Point.

In Word, the paste option does not gray out but still it does not paste any text.
In Notepad, copy/paste remains fully functional (No problem there).

Besides, when i try opening an existing Power Point file, it does not open and give some error message saying that
"an error occurred while opening....." However, a new Power Point file can be opened.

And while opening a word doccument (new or existing) it again says something like
"It will not be able to make links to other doccuments...." However, it opens it after displaying this message.

When i try to relogin(w/o restarting), the Explorer does not load and when i try restarting, it says that Explorer is not responding. When i opt to end Explorer, it restarts in the normal way and the problem is resolved after the restart.
However, again after sometime, it raises its head.

This virus comes again and again from the LAN.
But my Antivurs does not catch it most of the times.

The following error message appears, after which, I m unable to copy/paste and save web pages etc.

"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows ....."

Will a software firewall stop this?
(I m looking for zone alarm on a CD)

akif,
The Blaster worm will hit your systems again and again until the patches are installed for the (XP/2000/NT/2003Server) operating systems. Worse, it leaves holes where other viruses and worms install. I had experience where seven different viruses had to be individually cleaned off each client when we were infected by Blaster.
AV is not enough, firewall is not enough, the problem is a flaw in Windows.

I have just installed Win98; so now my system has dual boot (Win2000Pro &Win98SE); hoping this virus will not affect Win98.

From where can i find patches for these OSs?
Are they available for free download?
Or I have to buy a CD?
thnx

Patches are available on www.microsoft.com

Follow the instruction for your operating system and it will search and let you know what you need to get you up to date.
