Hi all! I have a friend who has asked me to help him on his monitor. He is telling me that it will go black and then come back. Any ideas on what to check for. He says that he'll be doing something and then all of the sudden the monitor goes black and then within seconds comes back. He didn't know what kind of monitor or vid card he has but if you need this information let me know. He is using Win98Se.

Thanks!
Gracious:p

Hi gracious!
Sounds like the Monitor is on the way out more than anything else.
I would check the obvious things like the connection to the video card, power etc.

Of course, the best test would be to try the Monitor on a different computer, or a different Monitor on that computer.

A more important matter at the moment though....Why the heck didn't you acknowledge your Birthday wishes in After Hours a couple of weeks ago??? :p  :D

OK, now back to the Monitor:He says that he'll be doing something and then all of the sudden the monitor goes black and then within seconds comes back
It almost sounds like the way a Monitor acts when it's changing Video resolution or Color Depth..(Like when you change it intentionally)
Is he doing anything in particular when it happens? Like loading or setting up a Game for example?
Still, best test is to try a different Monitor.......Oh, and Happy Belated Birthday. :p

Whoa gracious, that's been happening to me too. All of sudden just black on the monitor and then comes back. I had a feeling it was a sign of it's on it's way out. I can't find any other cause myself. Unless the guru's have any other suggestions your friend and I should both start shopping for new ones.
LG;)

Jabber~ I am so sorry...I have been so busy! TY TY TY another year older and no more wisdom to show for it LOL

Lady~yeah I was afraid of that...hmmm...there really isn't anyway to check it internally unless I want to meet the man upstairs!! LOL

I will check the card to make sure it is seated properly and check for any updated drivers...do you think I should check the refresh rate or anything in that line?

Hehe...I forgive you, but you should at least look at the cute Dog that went to your Birthday Party. :p

I doubt the refresh rate has anything to do with it. If it's fine with no "flicker" or any other problems, then all of the sudden it's dead and comes back, I would still be thinking a problem with the Monitor itself....But yes, make sure the Video card is seated properly and the Cables- (Both Video and Power are snug).

If I could get my hands on another Monitor for a few days though...That would be my preferred test after checking the obvious.

(Edit) I see you visited your Birthday thread while I was typing!
Happy Days! ;)
