problem 1: search results (not responding)

it just doesn't work at all...it freezes every time i try to use it

problem 2: application.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience. [this happens every time at start up]

error signature
App name updmgr.exe
ModName mfc42.dll

problem 3: everytime i try to update any software using the update buttons in the software i get the followong message no matter what program it is...even after it is re-installed "windows cannot find http:// [address] "

problem 4: when i try to remove the following update Q330994 in the add/remove program area i get the follwing message "invalid INF file"

i have re-installed windows XP home edition but no fixes happened...i suppose that could be because it was an update and not a full re-install since i don't have the slightest clue on how to re-format.

please any suggestions on the above problems would be greatly appreciated...i am running a Dell 2350 windows XP home edition OS.

thanks for all of your help :)

It sounds rather like a bad attack of malware of some form or another.
I assume that you have an anti-virus program, and that it's up to date, so please try this.

Download Hijack this (http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe)
Copy it into its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, do Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

You cut off the top of the header, so I can only assume that you are using the latest version of HJT. You have quite a mess here and it is probably because of this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KAZAA] C:\Program Files\Kazaa\kazaa.exe /SYSTRAY

We can start with the worst stuff and go from there. Download CWShredder, close your browser and run it. Choose to FIX and record the report it generates to post back here. Next, download and run Spybot and/or AdAware. I recommend doing both. Make sure you update them before running them. Fix all the items marked in RED in Spybot. Fix the items marked as a problem in AdAware...

After all of this, reboot, run HJT, open your browser and post the new log here along with the report from CWShredder and we will clean up whatever is left....

It looks like you have gotten rid of CWS, but you still have a bunch of stuff on there.... Did you run Spybot and/or AdAware??? Please note if you have in your next repy.

Next, I really urge you to get rid of Kazaa, it is a filth farm and you will almost certainly get reinfested if you keep it. Read this article about why it is so bad:

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/ZDM/Kazaa_mydoom_pcmag_040130.html

And you can find out about safe alternatives here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/

Now on to HJT. Close all open windows and your browser, open HJT and mark/fix:

These are unidentified items that I can't find and are probably bad. If you don't recognize them, you can check the Properties of the file to see if it is familiar. If it isn't, it is probably a good idea to fix them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = http://www.imperialconflict.com/

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cdch] C:\Documents and Settings\aarons\Application Data\auaw.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WNST] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnsapiit.exe

You also have MyWebSearch which is not entirely malware, but parts of it are and it is probably a really good idea to get rid of it all. If you agree, fix these as well. You will also need to remove it in Add/Remove Programs:

O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

Then, reboot into Safe Mode and remove these:

C:\WINDOWS\bp_bg.exe (unidentified, check Properties)
C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe (if you opt to dump MyWebSearch)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnsapiit.exe (unidentified, check Properties)
C:\WINDOWS\System\webcheck.exe (unidentified, check Properties)

Then reboot, run HJT again, open your browser and post a fresh log....

It looks like both of your logs are clean at this point....

It looks like you opted to get rid of Kazaa, so you also need to remove these and the associated program:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -

Associated program:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe

And here is my speech for staying clean:

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises
in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

you all have been wonderful and absolutely superb ;)
i appreciate all you have done. thanks for all of your help :D

1) are there any thoughts on how to fix my windows file search? ie. start>search= instant freeze

2) and how do i get windows to recognize my program software so i can update my programs on internet? not one single program i have will update itself on line (even after re-install)...i get the following message "windows cannot find "http://www.[address}" ...when i hit update buttons, that message will pop up or the program will just stop responding period.

thanks again for any suggestions on these matters if any :)

It sounds like there is still something infesting your system. It is possible that it is just that IE is corrupted by all the garbage that was in it, so you could try running the Repair utility in it and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't, try downloading and running a trojan cleaner like the trial version of TrojanHunter or a2 and see if that doesn't. If it still doesn't, post a fresh HJT log and we will look at it again....

Also, is this your intended StartPage??

How about the problems you were having, are they gone yet??? That is a major pile of trojans... However, your log looks clean, so if you are still having problems we need to do some more digging......

2 of the 4 problems are fixed...that is windows search tool still freezes and i still can not update any software using update buttons. :(

however, no more error messages on shut down or start up :)

Okay, I suspect that you have a Look2Me infection lurking where HJT doesn't see it. Try running this and then let us know how things are going:

Look2me is a piece of gackware specifically designed to be very difficult to detect (almost like it was written with HJT removal in mind) and it is tenacious, thwarting most removal efforts. Manual removal is nearly impossible unless in a dual boot scenario.

faithbuilder2,

It would be a good idea to start your own thread in Applications and Security to ask for help with this and follow the directions in this thread for downloading and running HijackThis so that you can post a log in your new thread. We will need to see the HJT log to offer assistance....

well, unless you're doing some ASIAN languages: IMEKRMIG.EXE is not needed

IMEKRMIG6.1 N IMEKRMIG.EXE Part of MS Input Method Editor <http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ime/default.asp> which is used to ease the input of Asian characters in MS Office (Chinese, Japanese and this one is Korean)
and:

I don't see anyone making mention of: Shareaza.exe- which also is very bad...

and is:

This wasn't in the earlier logs, did you recently install it???

C:\Program Files\Shareaza\Shareaza.exe

I was reading the article that I suggested earlier about file sharing programs and noticed that Shareaza is described as being OKAY, so I am guessing you downloaded it for an alternative....

Not really, but if you describe the problems you are having running HJT, we can probably help you figure it out... However, DO NOT hijack someone else's thread to do that, start your own thread and fill us in with as much info as possible....
