hi everyone!

after a bit of advice cos i am getting some problems (this is a long one!!!)

i have installed a new graphics card (GeForce FX5200 128DDR) into my pc and it has all installed fine but when i am running a game that uses a lot of res performace it seems that the monitor goes dead after about 10 mins!

i have already started the troubleshoting process myself to see if i can figure it out but things will get expesive before long if i can't get it sorted!

so far i have run dxdiag and all the results come back fine including DirectX 9.0b but teh game continued to kill the monitor. the only thing that has made me question from the dxdiag is that my mobo supports 4x AGP but according to the diag the card is only running on 2x? i have checked the drivers and have the 53.03 driver currently installed, can't find any AGP options in BIOS apart from the MB spec options of the card and priority boot over the onboard video!

after this i thought that it could be an overheating issue because although i havn't overclocked the card or CPU the heatsinks on both felt a bit too toasty for my liking! as the graphics card didnt have a fan on the heatsink i took the fan off the CPU heatsink (coolermaster 80mm) and then put that onto the graphics card and then put a Coolermaster Aero onto the CPU heatsink. now everything seems great cos i can leave the pc on for hours and the heatsink on both feel great as they actually feel cold now rather than fairly hot to the touch!

after this the monitor was still going dead but i found that if i unplugged all of my usb devices the game would run great! because of this i then went on a mission with the power supply. looking at the spec of the FX5200 it needed a min spec power supply of 300 Watts and on talking to a guy in one of the pc shops in my area we came to the conclusion that my 250 Watt power supply was only just about coping with the load of all the other componenets before the graphics card was installed!

i now have a 400 watt power supply with 2x fans built into the unit as well. ignoring the rest of the usb devices the one that is important is my ADSL modem which runs on usb (not my choice but only option with my ISP). when leaving this plugged in and running the game the monitor still goes dead but when its unplugged the game runs fine!!! trouble is thats the whole idea, so i can play online against my friends!

there are no IRQ conflicts and i am running Windows XP. the game that i am trying to sort out is Command & Conquer Generals and the expansion pack Zero Hour.

does anyone have any ideas whats going on with my pc??? help would be much appreciated as i am starting to get fed up now!

Cheers,

Alex

Have you looked at your power management settings? Is your monitor set to turn off after 10 minutes?

the power management settings are all disabled (set to 'Always On').

i have figured that the problem now lies only when i plug in my ADSL modem as when running the game with no USB devices attached the game runs fine. as soon as i plug in my USB ADSL modem the game crashes after about 10 mins again!

i have uninstalled both the modem and the graphics card and re-installed them with the most recent drivers available, including the newly released (3/3/04) Forceware driver for the graphics card.

now insterad of the monitor going dead the pc re-boots!

See if different(older) video card drivers fix things.
